Crew Management Ability &Speciaization

I need some help with Crew Management. In the Career mode when I return from being at sea I understand the crew can be awarded medals and promotions. Some of the medals are Purple Hearts which are usually awarded only to the wounded, so I don’t know why there is an expectation that some of the crew was wounded, but that’s another question. Some What I don’t understand is how the crews’ ability is enhanced. When you click on Current the categories you’re able to see include a sailor’s Rank, Skill, Specialization, ability and health. How do you enhance a sailor’s ability and/or change their specialization? I don’t understand how it works. Can someone explain it? Thanks.

You may want to change your text to white, little difficult to read.

Crewmen gain experience and after their experience goes over the indicated amount, they are automatically promoted unless they are at 3rd, 6th or 9th rank which requires your intervention to promote them to the 4th, 7th or 10th rank (while being in port)).
When you promote a crewman, there is a chance he will be granted a new specialization that you will have to choose from a list.
Also, there is a (smaller) change that he will be receive a random ability (e.g. to increase the efficiency of the men around him; if the ability is "local", only the men his compartment are affected; if the ability is a "global" one, all men receive a boost in efficiency, it's like having Superman on board).

A crewman that has just been promoted is indicated by a small icon in the shape of an arrow.

PS: it is best not to change the color of the text and let the forum use CSS to corectly color the text, no matter the theme visitors use. You can edit your post, "Switch editor mode" (icon on the top right) and remove the part that mentions the black color.

CSS is short for "Cascading Style Sheets" and is a standardized way to apply visual styles (color, position, alignment etc) to elements in a (x)HTML page.

Any infringement will lead to such unreadable texts.

Default Crew Management Ability & Specialization

Thanks for your reply. I’m in July 1942; I would have thought I would have seen some change in the crew’s ability by now, but under ability it still says “None.” I assume by your reply that the ability factor is something that changes without my intervention, but when do you see a change in this raring?

Also, thanks for the information on the CSS. I think I’ve go it now.
