S-class and SD Radar in 1942

I just installed SD radar in my S-class boat. It's late February and I'm beginning my 3rd war patrol. I can't see any lines on the SD screen to indicate that it's on... and hitting the ON switch doesn't seem to do anything. Any tips??

The SD radar isn't actually modelled into the game, it just works by the operator telling you there's a plane coming and how far away it is. The radar screen in the sub is for the SJ radar.
