Default Koreans talk up dog meat virtues

Quote:
From correspondents in Seoul | July 19, 2007

NORTH Korea's state media is talking up the virtues of dog meat, saying the controversial cuisine is a prized delicacy for coping with the summer heat.
Dog soup, called dangogi-jang or boshintang (health soup), is “the best cuisine” served over the summer season, the official Korean Central News Agency said, yesterday touting its nutritional properties.
Dangogi, literally meaning sweet meat, is an euphemism for dog meat that was coined by North Korea's founder Kim Il-sung in the early 1980s.

Dangogi-jang means dog meat soup.
“These days workers sweating to taste boshintang can be witnessed in any Dangogi houses and traditional restaurants in the capital of Pyongyang,” the agency said.
While dog meat restaurants are assuming a lower profile in South Korea, the reverse is true in the impoverished North.
Pyongyang has many dangogi-jang restaurants but defectors say dog meat has become a luxury elsewhere after chronic food shortages worsened in the mid-1990s.

As far as I'm aware, dog meat is better suited to winter dining as it has a warming effect on the body.

With regards to the taste, it's very similar to venison.

Also, in older german culture, dog meat is used to cure Tuberculosis. Not many would admit to eating it, considering it was usually a neighbors dog that went into the pot.

If somebody was sick with TB, and your dog went missing, you knew why.

I'm guessing it doesn't really work to cure TB.

Poor little pooches.

Pate de poodle.

Chiuaua catchatorie.

Fido fricassee.

Apple fritters a la mutt.

Terrier teppanyaki.

And Yorkshire pudding will never be the same.

Yum. Yum.

"Und AL schießt mal wieder den Vogel ab!"

P.S. German idiom. It means to score for the one trophy that is bigger than that of everyone else; ironic: surpassing everyone

They both like dog meat?

I don't see the problem. North Korea is an impoverished, poverty-stricken nation like few others. Even if you find it revolting to eat dog, you really can't tell them that this or that food is off-limits. I'd rather they keep themselves alive than try for Political Correctness, Premium Dog-lover Edition, revised 2/4 2007, copyright American Kennel Club (Linux version available).

As long as we eat foods deemed disgusting by others, we have no right to criticize upon others' food habits. Did you know that many cultures consider cheese to be revolting, seeing it's really spoiled milk? What about the Indians who deem cows to be sacred - should we respect them by stopping our eating of cattle and let them roam free in the streets?
