Default Best Sub?

This has probably been addressed before, but which Sub do you find to be best, and why?

Feel free to link to previous answers. At the moment, i'm using a Salmon-class, but thinking of going to a Tambor-class. Thoughts?

Well objectively speaking, the Balao should be best! It's got the most torpedoes and tubes, fastest speed and longest range (on par with the gato, anyway), and a diving depth waaaay greater than any other sub in the fleet.

I like earlier boats myself, like the Porpoise (in part because it reminds me lots of the Type IX that I'm so used to in SHIII) and Salmon.

Thanks for the advice. Is there something you can refer me to that has all of the submarines capabilities laid out empirically (sp?)? I'd really appreciate it.

Once again, thanks to the community for answering all my dumbass noob questions

Read me file of Trigger Maru

If you look in the mod forum, you'll find a sticky to the Trigger Maru mod. That read me file lists a few performance measures on the various sub classes.

And here is a link with some real world data that you can use to compare.

http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ships/ships-ss.html

Note: Not all subs listed there appear in the game.

The Balao is the 'best' sub, but for fun, the S is sure a challange.

I like the Salmon the best. I dunno why, probably because it's a 'middle of the road' sub. Challenging, yet handles well.

Balao all the way.

I was in shallow waters and some DD’s (I think) were doing a search pattern toward me and I out ran them to a deeper area while at periscope depth.
