Default Surface attacks

Why the surface attacks were conducted by the XO and not the kaleun? I always had this doubt.

Also it was done so to protect the kaleun.... He is the most experienced and high ranked man on the sub. If he dies in the middle of a surface attack, the sub would have to return to port, but if the WO gets killed, the mission can be finished. Sometimes, orders given for a specific sub were know only by the Kaleun... (Geheime Sache)

I always asumed it was done so the captain could concentrate on maintaining situational awareness, insted of getting bogged down with the technicalities of aquiring a fire solution. If it was to protect the captain, he would have to have stay below, wouldnt he? Cant seem to recall that being the case from the uboat books I've read.

True, perhaps my answer fell short. You are right in the fact that the capitain has to contorl everything below decks, and that's the main reason...

hey that's given me an idea

You could switch "weapon officer assistance" to the watch officer to represent your XO doing the targetting when on the surface....

it would also encourage players to conduct surface attacks in the early war
