Default Question: about estimated knots depending on displayed speed

so if a convoy is shown on my map and it's speed is "slow" what would be a good estimate of how many kts it's going?

can I get estimates for all of the following please?

very slow:
slow:
medium:
fast:
very fast:

thanks a bunch.

thanks but I don't think Ill be able to pan very good interception courses without speeds that are a little more refined.

Its hard to refine variables

Yup, what Steamwake said. I think you're under the impression that all "Slow" speed convoys move at the same speed. They don't.

I have a more refined list of what the various speed ranges are at home, but they're not far off of what Kant has listed.

As a rule of thumb, use the middle of the range when plotting estimates. IE, for a "Slow" speed use around 6 or 7 knots for plotting an intercept. When you get closer you can plot out the exact speed, but using the median will get you close enough. You're not going to plot a perfect intercept just based off a contact report on the map. You plot a rough guess, and when you are close enough to the convoy to pick it up on radar, sonar, or visual, you then plot a more exact solution with the information from that.

I would think for a slow moving convoy an 8kt intercept assumption would either run you smack into em or put you a bit out in front... in which case waiting or backtracking a bit is not too difficult.
