Good intentions, mate, but the rules are the rules....

http://www.mobygames.com/game/das-bo...oat-simulation
This is a description of this game, an old DOS game, inspired by the movie: 'Das Boot' and even named after it.
(Didn't see anything illegal about the link above )

I liked Wolfpack better though, was just cooler and gave you the option to play any sub in the wolfpack, or just any other vessel in that mission, including freighters, tankers and destroyers.

It's abandonware,mate.. The forum rules are clear on this issue, unless Neal changes them. There are many old & excellent games out there (Das Boot beeing one of them), but as long as the rules states that links to such sites isnt allowed, we just have to follow that.

I meant the link that I posted I searched for one which only describes the game and doesn't give a download option.
Good to know about the rules though

Maybe you should only post the information that is needed to search for the link?

Anyway, whats wrong with those abandonware sites? They're really not causing anyone any commercial loss, or do they?

It's no commercial loss to anyone downloading the DOS game 'Das Boot' anymore because it's so old. But still it's a commercial program which it's developers did not give out for free download, so it just falls under the category of abandonware.
This is not the case with SH3Gen, because this is not commercial at all.
If I got the point here .

And if THAT is not forbidden: a little hint on using goolge:
dos games "das boot"
will give you plenty of results on this game

It's a fragile issue, and in some way i do agree. But Subsim.com has a lot of cred. amongst the big game companies, and it wouldnt be right if subsim should approve the posting of links etc. to such things. As ichso say, its still a commercial program, and until its state af abandonware is blessed by it's devs, it can't be linked to (in here). But, it brings back good ol' memories to see that such games are still alive!

Played that game a lot, and still have it. I played it again last month for old memories sake, but the graphics were surprisingly bad compared to modern games.

At least it had encoded messages!

Dont know why you brought that into the discussion, but like most freeware Sh3Gen comes with a (simple) license, that you must read and accept. It allows you to use and redistribute the software freely, but you are not allowed to sell or reverse-engineer, nor are you to claim that you wrote it. Not that it should really matter to anyone, but I felt the need to stress that because your comment sounded a bit wrong - as much as its a widespread opinion - there are lots of misconceptions about free licenses and differences between freeware / open source and commercial software.

Maybe I should also say that programs like Sh3Cmdr or Sh3Gen are completely different in that respect to "mods". Because they dont (or if they dont) infringe on 3rd parties copyrights, and represent a copyrighteable work of their own, their authors can take people to court if there should be a breach of their license - a thing that you forfeit if you start working on classic mods (as I have said several times in the respective threads) - at least the situation is very complicated with mods.

This is not to threaten anyone, in fact I probably would never go into legal arguments over trifle like this, but just to clear up my view of the situation.

Sry, just brought that up because your signature wasn't acutally a signature, but a part of your post :hmm: :>
Though the difference between freeware, open source, shareware and the like.
