What a Jackpot

Patrolling off Japan in 1944 in rough seas and I picked up a warship dived and went silent and slowly this warship headed my way so I took a peek and I could not believe my eyes. One Aircraft carrier on her own crossing my bow at 5 knots, this must have been a one in a million jackpot in counter and of course I did my duty and sent her to the bottom.

It was stopping to pick him up. Tojo was a lousy wakeboarder.

perhaps they had been hit by another sub, and were lagging behind their task force due to engine problems.

still pretty lucky.

i hit a convoy yesterday, and all the DD's literally just sat and did nothing while i sank all the merchants. motionless. drifting.

I dont think the task force would leave a high value asset behind.

Default Shinano

There was a book about this, the japanese aircraft carrier Shinano was the same class as the yamato but instead of building it as a battleship they made a huge aircraft carrier. Captain of the SS Archerfish (if i remember correctly) cought her on her first time out of the harbor, no escorts, she didnt even have her planes in the air. He only got credit for sinking a regular sized carrier until we opened up the books with japan years later and they realized it was much larger.

I had a fog-time Merchant encounter once where I sank 5 ships and none of the DDs ever came close. Basically I silent ran in, periscope depth, let loose a 10 torp volley and dive for reload. Then I came up again and fired another 10 torps. All in all 5 ships sank, 2 damaged. I decided not to stick around so I dived and ran silently for a while until I was sure the coast was clear. All this time I could hear light screws on constant courses. Not even evasive action let alone hunting for whomever sand the merchants.

I keep hearing these reports but I have yet to see a DD do nothing.

Quite the opposite.

I have seen DD's skitter about scratching there head as to where I was.

I have seen Bungo Pete in action persicuting me at 200 + feet below thermal layer in silent running (he got the kill by the way).

But I have never seen them do "nothing".

Was it O'Kane or Morton that watched Shokaku steam past after Coral Sea? I seem to remember that she had either dropped behind her escorts or was steaming unescorted... Can't check at the moment, though, sorry.
