Default Neutrality

Running Beery's RFB 1.28. I'm on the surface 100 miles WNW of Luzon on the afternoon of 5 December 1941. I spot a Japanese destroyer squadron steaming toward me on a straight course at 12 knots. I hold my almost reciprocal course and pass them about 2 cables apart, had the game allowed I would have rendered passing honours. They ignored me. What if I had fired on them? Would I have been Court Martialed or given a medal?

Depends....

I'd say if you sank one, and it sank fast enough so that any sort of emergency distress protocol was useless, and then failed to report your sinking that it would take a few weeks for the fate of the ship to be determined, and by then the war would be on in earnst.

But the game registers kills as you make them.

In Sh3 I was rewarded for sinking neutral merchants, because when I just started playing I was under the assumption that Unrestricted means 'Unrestricted', so I would get tonnage based medals even though I sank neutral vessels.

What I dont get is way even sampans off the coast of Java or Borneo are still considered hostiles. I get it if they are off the coast of Japan, even Korea and the Yellow Sea...but it seems a bit blood thristy to kill the crew of a 10th generation fishing boat off the coast of a relativly distant, undeveloped occupied island of only 1-3 yrs.

It would be nice if those poor Indonesian fisherman got a reprive from being considered war tonnage. Dont get me wrong, I dont let them see me in order to maintain my stealth, but setting thema balze is a bit much, they should be neutral.

In fact it was stated that a US sub recieved tanks and applause from local Korean fisherman in teh Yellow Sea after they sunk some Japanese tonnage...well atleast the sub thought it was applause(they may have been cussing them out...I believe it was the USS Tang.)

If you sink a neutral, then you are deemed a RENEGADE by that neutral's country. That means that for the next 24 hrs you will be fired upon by that nation's ships. You also get negative renown.

If you sink allied ships, you will get massive negative renown.

If you just take pot shots at neutrals/allies, without sinking them, nothing happens - HOWEVER, do expect return fire from allied warships.
