after reading all the stuff on the game, still havent purchased it yet..
but, a tactic that was used was the hull down (decks awash) only the conning tower visible. is that an option in SHIV? |

Yes and no, The crew will go inside at around 25 feet submerged. You can stay on top up to 39 feet submerged. Yes, deck awash can be done. Just you as the lone ranger though

And you can still work the deck gun/ aa guns as long as they are above water.

I find setting the depth to 25' on the dial (where both the text and the voice echo "25") which produces a reported actual depth of 22' a very useful setting. Crew will man both the DG and FG and deck is nearly or partially awash (depending on the weather.) Surface engines remain in effect. This allows getting in close at high speed on the diesels and all weapons can be brought to action. Submerge is nearly instant. Setting this depth is sometimes a little tricky and may take several clicks (depending on how high a resolution you are using) but well worth the effort. It has the added benefit that enemy guns and planes take longer to range in on your sub for a hit as the hull down confuses them. Speed is reduced about 35%.
