1. Use the SH3-GWX icon or better yet, install SH3 Commander and use its icon.

2. The other ammunition was removed by the GWX team because the 160 of High Explosives is more realistic.

3. Man the deck gun, use F10 (IIRC) and fire the gun your self. Aim for the water line which causes flooding. Note: after the "Happy Days" and "Operation Drumbeat", most deck guns were removed from the u-boats since most merchant ships were also armed and they really needed more anti-aircraft guns.

also using SH3Commander you can modify the deck gun reload times... 3 or 4 seconds for an expert crew... more like 5 or 6 seconds for an average crew.

That sounds like some very quick reload times. The crew needs to pick the shells up from the hold, pass them up through the cunning tower (unless they open the forward hatch, which is unlikely if there is more than a breeze) and carry them forward across a slippery, moving deck. I don't believe the U-Boots had external storage compartments for AMM, but I could be mistaken. Before they can fire first round they also need to remove the muzzle protection and fit the sights.

Those timings are almost the same as what's expected from a modern 105mm towed howitzer crew.

U-Boat Crews were trained in gunnery, that's why they could fire 15-18 rounds per minute (i.e. a shot in 3-5 seconds) Have a look at this article for more information http://uboat.net/technical/guns.htm

Thanks for this - I'm still a little sceptical that the average crew could keep up a sustained fire of 15-18 rounds per minute - that is a VERY, VERY QUICK. Would be interesting to hear if anyone has some historial references to engagements where they could achieve this high rate of aimed fire.

I'm not an expert on the subject (actually I've never held a gun in my life) but I think it was possible to sustain such a quick (really quick as you correctly point out) rate of fire. My reasoning (and I'm speculating here) is that they were not firing a lot of rounds, as they were not engaged in gun fights. The whole idea of the deck gun was to finish off targets and engage small unarmed vessels. Usually 5-10 rounds should do the job in those situations. Therefore the actual rate of fire can be sustained for a few minutes, but probably not for a prolonged period of time.

1/ does not matter, they are pointing to the same executable file. I keps the GWX one and deleted the other shortcut

2/ 160 shells was the realistic load for an U-Boot

3/ why do you want to increase the gun's effectiveness? It's quite effective against merchant ships (what it should be used against). Do not use to fight armed ships like destroyers, your boat is unprotected and can take huge damage from a single shell.
