Default Councillors Back Plan to Raise U-Boat

Derry City Council has backed plans to raise one of the few remaining fully intact German U-boats off the Donegal coast. The German boat was recently discovered by local divers off the coast of Malin Head and it is hoped it could eventually be displayed in Londonderry. A motion put forward by the SDLP has now been adopted, calling on the Government to consider raising the boat to mark the fleet’s historic surrender in Londonderry after World War II.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

I suppose that is one of the self-sunk during operation Regenbogen, right? If it were a sunk in combat unit it could be considered a war-tomb :hmm:

How did they sink the U-boats?
Explosives?

Why didn't they mothball them?

They generally opened the sea valves and let the sub flood naturally

Lots sunk by accident under tow as well. Subs aren't really stable on the surface under tow.

Some great U-boat sub wrecks off SW Ireland for scuba diving. U260 in particular.
