Default noobie questions

My questions:

1., How can I check the shipbook with MERCHANTs? If I press the N-key I got the ship book, but I found only the warships...

2., In SH3 there was a function, if I lock the target, I could click on a officer and he told me the info about the target (eg. the distance). And I could pick up the shipbook and (in easy level) I hadn't search for the ship, because this officer bookmarked the target... Could I do something similar in SH4?

By shipbook, do you mean the recognition manual? If so, open the recognition manual and click the back arrow until you reach "merchants". There will be no picture on the front of the manual associated with the merchant pages, it will just say merchants.

I hope this helps.

Oh, and when using the attack periscope or TBT there is a slide out mechanism on the left hand side of the screen. Open it up and move the selector at the bottom left of this panel. Once you have a ship in your sights it will tell you what type of ship it is, the distance and the speed.

Thank you!

I searched the merchants under the japonese flag...

I used that panel, but in SH3 was it more "authentic"...

Thanks again!

One more question:
In the SH3 I suffered with the allied planes, but it's OK, because the allied air superiority... But here? Is it correct the jap planes always attack me. I (my man) shot down 5-6 planes and we are out of ammo, and the jap planes are come and come. I dive and hide (for an hour), but when I go up the surface after 2-3 minutes the planes come back again. How they know my exact position, even if I change my direction? Have they on-board radar?

Merchant ships are not under the specific country's sections in the recognition manual. They are in their own section (with no flag) titled "merchants."

The high frequency of the air attacks is to make the game more 'exciting', presumably as part of the efforts to widen the sim's appeal (no bad thing in itself), but they've overdone it a bit for most people however.

There are some mods available (check the modder's forum) which will tone things down a bit if you find it annoying. Nevertheless, despite the somewhat unnerring accuracy with which aircraft seem to vector to your position, the Japanese were not totally incompetent in these areas and did have plenty of maritime patrol aircraft, so it's not desperately wrong if you are near the Japanese coastline or territories they have held for some time.

You can actually mod stuff like that yourself fairly easily to suit your preferences, as it's just a line or two in the config files that determines things like that.

As far as the planes, stay submerged all day. I set my speed at 2kts and TC until dark then surface.

Once a random enemy aircraft spawn gets triggered, it will continue to fly it's specified route back and forth for a good portion of the day, if not all. Back and forth, back and forth.

So if you surface anywhere near where you were first overflown or even near it's patrol path, it will continue to attack you.

I usually travel away from it's 2-point patrol path and surface when far enough away - avoid it the rest of the day.
