Default Speculation on the future of weapons.

What will warfare be like in 80 years time?

Will tanks still be around or will detection systems render them conspicuous and missiles render them useless?
How long before infantry can be detected and destroyed accurately from many miles away?
Will weapons be more advanced than countermeasures or the other way around?

What about the future of subs?
or palnes?

Any ideas?

To paraphrase Albert Einstein, probably sticks.

I think some of today's 'standards' like tanks will still be around in the same way that World War II bolt-action rifles are around today; used in poorer states, factions, civil wars, etc etc. Automation will be big - those that can afford it will have ships and planes with no crews. Dunno about subs, maybe some incredible advances in ASW technology will render them obsolote

That said, none of this stuff will ever get used. In 80 years wars will be too costly, too unpopular and weapons too powerful to risk duking it out with another state.

What do you think?

80 years is about the time the effects of Global Warming will start being felt (or two decades short of that). Warfare will take place between those who wish to remain alive and those who wish the populational level to be reduced to a level that can be sustained by the diminishing food output.

First they will come for the old, sick and infant. The old are a burden on the system. So are the sick. And the infants are a burden waiting to happen. Reproduction is prohibited. Then a triage will be done by skill, age, health, etc. where the worst scorers will face execution. The process will be as corrupt as it gets but the pile of bodies will be a great temporary relief to the food production.

Armies will fight with Laser tanks, guided-munition rifles, flying saucers and paralyzing focused sound-wave emitters. Militias will use today's arsenal. Once WW5 is over, the world will end and Earth will become the 2nd Mars. The "damned", as they call themselves, will be a small bunch of remaining survivors who will go back to the caves and shut the doors close to live in the underground, recycling the air with the machines they take with them (fusion reactors, tunnel-digging machines, etc) and grow enough fungus to sustain themselves for a few centuries untill they get an epidemic disease and perish. Untill then, they will fight with stones and melee weapons made out of metal junk.

The "damned", as they call themselves, will be a small bunch of remanining survivors who will go back to the caves and shut the doors close to live in the underground where they can maintain a breathable atmosphere with the machines they take with them (fusion reactors, tunnel-digging machines, etc) and grow enough fungus to sustain themselves for a few centuries untill they get an epidemic and perish. Untill then, down there they will fight with stones and melee weapons made of metal junk.
You should write scifi TteFAboB. Your imagination is marketable.

The only thing you missed is that those with personal firearms will be in charge.

From "The Secret War of Lisa Simpson":

The wars of the future will not be fought on the battlefield or at sea. They will be fought in space, or possibly on top of a very tall mountain. In either case, most of the actual fighting will be done by small robots. And as you go forth today remember always your duty is clear: To build and maintain those robots.
