Default A few questions from a noob...

1) Is there any way to ignore ship sightings in navigation mode, it seems to take up hours to get to the designated grid on my first mission.
2) is there any way to refuel/reammo while at sea.

thanks for any input

1. I think you are referring to the small contact reports that pop up from time to time... you are not REQUIRED to chase those individual contacts down.

2. Refueling and re-arming at sea in the off the shelf version of the game is not possible, for that you will have to upgrade to GWX (Grey Wolves eXpansion pack)

The navigation mode will only "react" that means go to lower time compression if there is a enemy ship sighted. This would normally be good - because if you meet the enemy at high compression, it might take long before he pound your sub to shreds.

If you still like to change these settings you have to manually edit a *.cfg file in notebook. I believe maybe in the DATA/CFG folder (not sure)

Maybe somebody else can help out here?

SH3 Commander lets you set the Time Compression settings for all situations.

If indeed that's what Shelf meant, I have my setting for when 'hunting ship' to x128. This allows me to quickly get away from a ship if I don't want to engage.
Without that, yeah, it can take a long time to sail away from a ship so you can go to time compression again.

Hey Shelf,
Welcome aboard. As stated by others you can just ignore them and continue on to your grid. What I like to do is dive to 20 meters, go to all stop on the engines. Then I right click on the hydrophone operator and do a manuel sweep on sound. If you pick him up chances are you won't have to chase him too far.

no refueling available in vanilla mode. After you have enjiyed stock SH3, try the GWX mod. It will blow you away..............

I started on realistic mode straight away with Grey Wolfes installed. Where can I re-fuel at sea in Grey Wolfes? Thanks

If you want to refuel at see you have to use the "Milk Cows". They're special U-Tankers that can be found at particular times in particular places. They do seem like bases on the map and you dock to them as you dock to any other base. Press F1 and see the resupply info. There you will get all the details about them

Welcome aboard kaleun Shelf
To refuel at a milchcow, get to within 5km or so (the nearer the better) and press 'Esc' then dock at U-463 or whatever. You can only refuel, rearm and award medals (no boat upgrades allowed) and will be given a 'NULL' patrol grid for your next patrol

What's the deal with renown and expirence when you dock at a milk cow? Is it just like the end of a partol (without being able to upgrade)? Or is the patrol still going until you get back to a real base? Or what?

If you dock at a resupply ship it's exactly the same as docking in a friendly base. You don't get renown for docking, you cannot upgrade your boat, you repair your boat, you get medals, promotios etc and your patrol ends. In the next patrol (when you leave from the supply ship you have a patrol grid NULL which means that you don't get renown for reaching and patroling your patrol grid.

So refitting in GWX before completing your assigned patrol is a double-edged sword:

+ repair/refuel/rearm
+ promotions and medals
- loss of original patrol grid renown
- NULL patrol area

It sounds to me like it's best to refit on the way back from patrol for any needed fuel and repairs. SH3 has the Esc/End Patrol feature though, so what is the incentive to refit I wonder?

Using a Milk Cow or Neutral Port is a 'double edged sword' in any version of SH3 that has them.

You do not loose the renown for reaching your patrol grid or completing your 24hr BUT you will not get the renown for manually returning to base.(which you're not getting anyway if you warp back)

Now, I thought that if you were using SH3Cmdr and were docked at a milk cow/port then you can exit SH3 and set a new Patrol Grid in SH3Cmdr's menu and then carry on.:hmm: Maybe you still get a NULL grid after doing that anyway, can't remember.

The incentive to use a milk cow/port to refit, refuel & reload is for the players who conduct long patrols and play at 100%, ever tried making it to the US or even Capetown in a Type 7? Not only that but it's historically correct, they were there in the war, why not in the game.

So you get the renown even when it says patrol grid null after a refit? Good to know. I forgot about the renown for manually returning to base, it's been awhile since I've played SH3. I just started my first GWX patrol last night too (late to the party, I know).

60% - 80% is what I usually play on. Me at 100% =

Agree totally. I'm all for more features, whether I use them personally or not.
