Default What's missing from this pic?

Something's missing here...

This is a nice Medium Modern Composite Freighter I sank this afternoon, put one torp in the engine room which brought her to a dead stop and within minutes she took on a 40 degree starboard list but absolutely would not sink. So I surfaced and closed to about 800 yards on her starboard side for a little deck gun exercise.

Put about 10 - 15 rounds of HE into her at the waterline and she was still floating. So I decided to see if I could get some cargo on the foredeck to detonate and speed things along. Easy enough as the list had her deck facing toward me.

Well 2nd round fired, I got a big suprise! Hit right at the base of her foremast, and blew the mast clean off!!! It launched up in the air, tumbling, came down and hit the deck and broke apart before sinking That was a sight to see!

Hmm, can I blow off the aft mast too? Yep, 4 or 5 shots and the aft mast followed.

I've sunk a lot of ships with the deck gun but I've never seen that before... Can't help but wonder if there's other bits that can be blown off with a well-placed shot? Funnels? Life boats? Deck houses?

I'm looking forward to my next gunnery practice

Dunno about SH4 yet but in SH3 you could blow funnels off masts propellors cargo life boats and other bits, so im sure you can do it on SH4

Kapitan, only reason I mentioned it is I've never seen it in several careers of SH3, and 5 or 6 patrols of SH4. Only parts I've seen getting blown off is the usual deck cargo boxes flying all over the place when something in the ship explodes, and the various unidentifiable "bits and pieces" that leave nice smoldering trails following an explosion Never have I targetted a specific location on a ship, hit it, and had a specific part fly off without the ship blowing up also...

There were no explosions here, except for the HE impact. Took another 8 or 10 rounds after I'd de-masted her before she finally blew up and sank. It impressed me

Warhawk, thanks but it's a crappy screenshot Just wanted to show the masts gone. Wish I could have got a free-cam screenshot showing the mast airborne but there wasn't time to go to free-cam and pause it before the show was over

Not crappy at all....nice murky water, green alge doing its thing, a ship split in two....looks good to me.

When you get some more screenshots, post in the screenshot thread. This is most favorite stop on this forum. Got some awsome shots there now. Great place to keep them all together for viewing!

PS. I take some of them for my desktop pictures....shhhhhh...don't tell.....

This brings up a good question though: why are some of the ships so hard to sink? I have hit with as many as four torps leaving at least one gaping hole in the side and they still keep plugging along!

Another thing that I've noticed is that if you blow a visible hole in a ship then save game, exit, and come back later, then that hole is gone. The ship might still be listing, but there is no evidence of any damage.

Thanks Warhawk glad you like it I posted a screenie there a month ago, it's here:

Not too bad, I kinda like the composition and lighting in that one. That was done in v1.1 so it's 1024x768 upscaled to 1600x1200, then downscaled back to 1024x768 so it looks kinda "jaggy". But I found it to be a pleasing shot overall.

Only bad part is, you have to read my crappy attempt at haiku...

Odd you should mention that, after blowing out her engine room but before sinking her (or even de-masting her) I looked all over with the free cam and didn't see any damage at all??!!!?! Didn't save and reload either. There should have been a gigantic gaping hole. After scoring 20+ hits with HE, there were a few holes in the deck, and 1 or 2 along the waterline

Her companion, a Medium Old Split Freighter that I also sank, showed a massive wound from the torpedo. Didn't check her out for deck gun hits as she went down quickly.

Consider it done, I re-did that attack run and demasted her again. This time actually got to free-cam, got it paused, and got a 1/2-way decent screenshot posted here:
