Default Do ships break in half and can propellers be blown off? I havent seen it yet.

Sorry for the million threads but I guess I'm getting all my little questions out all at once.

Do ships break in half anymore? Can we blow the propellors off ships?

I must have sank half the japanese navy by now and have yet to crack a ship in half or hamstring a ship even when the torp hits the rudder head on.

Anyone else having luck with this? It would be a damn shame if that feature was ironed out

Someone posted a screenshot a few days ago of a maru with it's prop blown off. Evidentally it was still trucking right along however.

I've not seen any keels break apart but I haven't been using magnetics (due to their unreliability) under the keel but using contact triggers on the side of the vessel so that's not surprising.

So what am I doing wrong?

I aim for center and the torp explodes at the lowest point barely grazing the underside of the hull. This always brings them right under but no breakage.

I'm sad

Plus if torpedoing a little tincan with 290 kg of torpex in the stern doesnt blow the props off, I dont know what can

Does not happen all the time. Sometimes if I get the stern area she will break. Deadeye I'm not with the torpedoes. Keeps sending the tin fish, it will happen

Yeah SHIII ship breakage was excessive and I think I got spoiled maiming the british navy. Now I expect every ship I pop to shatter instantly.

I guess I need to wait for the grey wolves of the pacific to get my maiming fix.

Yes, I've had quite a few ships get blown in half. Depends on what speed they are making and where the torp hits, along with what their cargo is....I would assume alot of variables...

....it is possible, I've also hit them in the props and disabled their progress and pretty much stopped them in the water. Those were more lucky shots than anything.....misjudged the targetting and almost missed them...but the torp hit them in the props rudder area.

Oh yeah!!! It is fun!!! Last night I had blown off both props on a DD. The little bugger did not go down but stopped. Smoke everywhere, fires! She started blinking her spotlight with Morse code and his little buddies started coming my way. I whacked him again and he broke in two. Last time he tries that light crap again

I've only had 2 blow in half so far. One was a medium merchant that was struck just forward of the bridge. Cargo or fuel bunker must have been set off.

The other was a gunboat at anchor in a harbor. Even at shallow setting, the torpedo will go under the hull. I set the magnetic detonator and when the torp went under the hull... BOOM

Blew it in half and almost totally out of the water. The stern sank, but the bow section floated for a while before sinking.

Something like this?

Click the picture for the link to the page, it's from the Wiki article on the Mk 48 torpedo.

A nice effect I don't recall from SH3, is the ability to disable different engines. Encountered a task force of about 12 Destroyers and 4 Cruisers (1 heavy, 3 light) and took out more than a few engines. It was funny to see them limping around on 1 prop, flahing their lights while 12+ destroyers scream around like hornets hunting for you......

....none of the cruisers ever made it home either.

I've also shot masts off, they fall real well, and make a hell of a racket.

Yes, I crippled a Jap destroyer. Took off one of his props and waited for the convoy to abandon him. He was taking on water astern. Eventually I surfaced and deck gunned his azz. Patient rewarding revenge, he was a big meanie.

I've tested sinkings on one type of cargo vessel with different loadouts
on it. The cargo it is carrying DOES make a difference on how it sinks.
Ammo will break a ship in half if hit amidships every time....
