If you are good, I know the sonar limits. I'm making a Sonar Tweak mod via request for ease of play release tomorrow (edit after patch 1.2 because of changes to file).

You the player can detect ALOT with active and passive sonar if you study it carefully. The manual ping of a target will go the distance at 4000 feet/sec and time it seconds to come back (divide by two half distance travelled, the ping hiatus is for real) you get distance to target very far away. It works all the way out to around 20,000 yards/meters! The sonar scale display is off and only goes to 5500 yards (says 4500?). It is off about 250 yards.

The AI is limited how far if you ask your crew to about 4000-5000 yards maybe I think. You can also hear yourself the passive hydrophone very far to 20,000 whatever it is meters. Passive hydrophone via the crew is limited it seems to about 8 km. You human can hear much further out.

Stock values for Active and passive sonar. I do not know which. I changed the 'max' so I can use it periscope depth (lazy I know). Sensors_US.sim

-6 whatever units (meters?) at 5000 m
-6 whatever units to 20,000 m
-9 whatever to 15,000 m

All these have min set for -300 m? just as was in SH3.

Radar, ask Ducimus and others that played with stuff. He has good knowledge.

as far as I know, and according to some quick tests I did, if you man the hydrophone, you can hear contacts at 34 kms while your SO at 20 kms.
