A dev said in one of the interviews that "if your PC supports a resolution, SH4 can use it." This isn't the case with 1280x720 which is my native screen resolution.
1024x768 isn't too good without FSAA on a 56" screen. Proper widescreen support includes 720p, equally and perhaps more important than 1080i and other resolutions. Consider that any 8800 owner with a TV that does not support 1080p will probably overscan 1080i, and 8800's cannot underscan anything right now due to broken drivers. So we're stuck at 1024x768. Please, please, please fix 1280x720 with the next patch. |

C:\Documents and Settings\....your user folder........\My Documents\SH4\data\cfg\main.cfg If you text edit it with notepad.exe you should find this section: [VIDEO] Resolution=1024,768,60,22 DynamicShadows=No FullScreen=Yes Synchronized=Yes TextureResolutionHigh=Yes Try manually changing it to: [VIDEO] Resolution=1280,720,60,22 DynamicShadows=No FullScreen=Yes Synchronized=Yes TextureResolutionHigh=Yes That *might* force it.. I tried that settings, and strangely it went to 1600x1200. No luck. I too would really like to get this game running at 1280x720. While it isn't the native res of my lcd (actually 1920x1080), I fear my system (p4 3.ghz northwood, 1 GB DDR400, Nvidia 6800 OC) will not drive it without some serious slowdown. Anyone have any advice? Shame when you can tweak most games to do custom WS res but so far, not this one...

well, I also have a 40" LCD TV connected together with my 19" Widescreen LCD monitor to the video card.
The LCD TV has a resolution of 1366 X 768, what about that kind of resolution? I can play the game, I can't see the menu bar below.

Most games, nearly all games in fact, get their available resolutions from Windows. If your Display Properties->Settings shows the resolution as being available then you should get it within MOST games including SH4. To get/make custom resolutions either use Powerstrip, or, with Nvidia cards goto the Nvidia control panel, click Manage custom timings and create the resolution you want. Powerstrip is really good but the last time I looked it didn't properly support Nvidia 8800s. Missing menu bar - This is MAY BE a different issue. You are might be getting an overscan issue on your TV. Check to see whether your TV supports 1:1 pixel mapping or, at least has adjustable overscan - if it does.. set it to 0. In essense overscan expands the screen over the edges by between 5% and 15%, sometimes even higher.. Sometimes you can adjust overscan on the graphics card.. I think Powerstrip lets you manage overscan although I remember it being fiddly. |

very few if any of vid cards support 1366x768. You usally have to go with 1368 with powerstrip because if I remember correctly 1366 isn't divisible by 8. Text is going to be a little fuzzy however. Unfortunately 1366 will always be an uphill challenge. 1280x720 is indeed supported by my 37" lcd. I use it as my common resolution for browsing and such. I wonder why I'm not seeing it then, unlike say.... HL2 or games that you can even manually tweak .ini like FEAR.

I have a couple of other things you can try: I am guessing you go from DVI on your 6800 to HDMI on the back of your screen. If you do I would suggest you try VGA or even DVI if your TV has it. I have a couple of Samsung HD TVs and both work totally differently if you connect to the VGA port rather then HDMI. I actually get a perfect 1:1 pixel mapped image @ 1366x768 on the 32" but ONLY if I use VGA. If I use HDMI it will only accept 1280x720 or 1920x1080i. You get a very marginal loss in picture quality against DVI.. if any. I have seen the type of issue you have with 1280x720p before. First of all it could be to do with you having the TV as a secondary display. It could also be the way the SH4 Devs are reading the driver information... it may not be their fault really. |

Thanks for the input, I'm currently running HDMI 2 DVI... but like I said, plenty of [older] games play 1280x720 no problem... so I can't envision running VGA just to appease this game. I'd be really surprised if it worked though, so I may give it a go... but as you may know, inputs quality varies greatly from LCD-TV to TV. And for my Sceptre, VGA ain't the greatest; certainly a major PQ difference on my own from DVI. I'd be equally as surprised if you pushed a 1368 rez to your monitor. I have a smaller LCD TV in my bedroom (23 inch Olevia) that is native 1366x768 and even if I time powerstrip to 1366, it won't display 1366, as I understand it, no vid card can. It might say so, but it defaults to 68, and if you check closely at this rez with text on the screen (i.e. browser) you'll see all is not right. BTW, my LCD TV is my primary and only display; in my living room next to my PC.

Again FYI I had huge problems running 720P through HDMI. It worked but overscanned so I lost the windows menu bar etc.. I eventually gave up and went VGA which to my surprise worked really well. Sorry I can't help more. |

I use my 56" HL-P5685W Samsung DLP as my primary and only display over DVI. 1280x720 is the native resolution and I don't think the TV can underscan or set 1:1 pixel mapping for anything above 1080i - it just crops the edges and tough luck. But I need to do more checking in the menus (and hidden menus).
I'm surprised to hear that the behavior might be totally different over the VGA port. I'll have to try it! Thanks for the suggestion! I don't use HDMI because it would require an adapter from the 8800 and I prefer to go adapterless. Hence DVI. Also DVI doesn't have the HDCP copy protection which I'm trying to avoid as long as possible, and HDMI also sends audio over the line but I use an external audio system so that is useless, and DVI seems like a better solution. However, I've heard that the DVI implementations were a giant mess so I could see how using the VGA port might be different. |

Yes as you say PQ over VGA varies and I was quite surprised how good it was on the Samsung.. although since then I've used it on other TVs in the house and again have been reasonably happy with the results. The Media Centre comment was for general information only. I actually run SH4 on an 8800GTX connected by DVI to a 27" Dell 1920x1200 monitor. It may be that the SH4 devs have not allowed for 16:9, just 16:10! |

What's really weird though is I have a 16:9 res in game video options that my LCD doesn't even support shown which is 1600x900, which upon restart of game defaults to 1600x1200 which btw looks squeezed on the sides. The other resolutions are 1024x768, 1280x1024, and 1920x1080, all in both 60 and 75hz (less 1080 which is 60hz). I wonder why... should I email tech support or post this problem in the official 'game problems' thread? There's gotta be a setting (besides main.cfg) that has all these resolutions to manually adjust (I hope). C&C III - Tiberium Wars = 1280x720p from the get go. Come on with a patch... sheeesh

Here is 1280x800 on somebody's blog. What must one do to force a 'certain' resolution. Anyone?
