He said the Britons would be released immediately and taken to an airport.
"They are free after this meeting and can go back to their families," Mr Ahmadinejad said.

The British government was not even brave enough to tell their people the truth
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

"I'm asking Mr Blair to not put these 15 personnel on trial because they admitted they came to Iranian territorial water," he said, referring to taped "confessions" made by the British sailors and marines.

how magnanimous of him.

As with many Arabs, sorry Persians, this is an exercise in saving face and sabre rattling. Still, at least some Iranian military commanders got a few medals out of this sorry mess.

As for the release; the proof is in the pudding, so to speak. Iran says many things. Until I see it happen I will have to consider this with a large double handful of salt.

I'm not at all cynical, you know.

He bowed out of the window very much. I can't see him taking back his statement woithout loosing hisface even more. So I tend to be carefully optimistic. Also, not all Iranians are hysterical demonstrators, ultraorthodox clerics and revolutionary guards. I'm sure that Ahmadinejad has been under massive pressure over the last days. If you think there is friendship between him and the clerics, then you are wrong. His aggressive style is threatening their strategy to cautiously, patiently outmaneuvre the West, instead of heading for a big-mouthed showdown.

...Now i'm going to be really interested to see what a debrief produces. Was all this "We are grateful for your forgiveness", "We are sorry for trespasssin" etc....was all this stuff simply training on how to deal with captives? Going to be an interesting thing to watch....

No your right. The Iranian government is run by Arabs, and the vast majority of his followers are Arabic. Persians HATE Arabs (Think bloods and crips).

Otherwise, I'll have to see them in British hands to belive this.
