Default One hit wonders! (Tell us your one hit kill stories!)

Alright, so I figured I'd throw this out here seeing as how no one has said anything about it yet.

How many of you have one hit killed an enemy ships, freighter or otherwise.

If you can't remember how many you've killed (like me...I do it way too often) then tell us your best one hit wonders!

I'll start it off.

I was doing one of the quick missions, the one with the Yamato and carrier task force, and you're supposed to try and sink it.

Well, I got into a good firing position a couple kilometers out, about 3 or 4 I caught remember. I was going ahead 1/3 and was being dogged by a couple pesky DDs. So I lined up a shot on the Yamatos nose and let a fish off. And because of the range, I started to focus on other priorities, like the DDs.

So I was weaving in and out of the DDs paths and checked in on my torps heading. It was still going well, but I noticed that the Yamato had increased her speed...damn...So I popped back into the periscope view to lock on another set of fishes when I spotted a carrier ambling into the view from the right.

I blinked, checked on the torps path and sure enough the torp would hit the carrier instead! "Cool!" I thought outloud, and proceeded to make a bearing for the carrier instead, cause...

"One fish isn't enough to sink a carrier..."

A few seconds later, the torp catches the carrier right amidship on the SB side and exploded. The carrier lit up like a bonfire dowsed with gasoline. Planes on the deck exploded into the air and the carrier began sinking. Within 20 seconds she was below the waves.

I sat there, stunned, awed and amazed. I figured the torp caught it in either boiler room and ignited the coal, or it hit one of the fighter munition magazines.

Either way, I've tested this with other ships, and sure enough, if you get a target moving slow enough and at the right angle, you can aim for a sure kill spot for warships, directly under the 2nd fore turret (or if the target has only one forward turret just a bit behind it) and let a fish off. You can try it yourself in the torp tutorial. Just aim a fish under the 2nd turret and fire. You'll explode the magazine and sink it no problem. Merchants, that's another story. I haven't tested it too extensively, as the weakspots varies from ship to ship, but if you aim under the stacks and set the depth for a couple meters below the waterline, again varies from ship to ship, you'll have a 50% chance of igniting the coal and sinking the ship.

So, that's my story and theory!

Tell us yours!

Think the only one hit shots for me have been destroyers.. once was when he was coming straight for me (stupid mistake on his part) and I got him... and he thought he had me...

You can try this in game, if you come across a convoy in the early years on the war near the port Davao (it's near the Celebes Sea) You'll find a convoy of 4 DDs, 3 Agami cruisers and about 6 or 8 passenger ships.

I've one hit killed all three cruisers every time I play that patrol. They're also one of the bugged convoys (don't go over 1 knot) so they're easy prey. Just watch out for the DDs, cause they will hunt you down.

Just do it the way I said, aim for the forward magazine and you'll get them.

Small boats only. But I will tell you about the Tanker I hit 6 times and it kept steaming off at speed. That was fun.

This one time in an online game with Devilthorn, I fired a torpedo at a freighter and one hit killed a life raft. They had NO idea it was coming... :rotfl:

My proudest one-shot kill was the Shokaku. It was in a terrible storm off of the Philipines when I ran into a task force. A single torpedo into the side, and she rolled over and sank.

First patrol, Konga class battleship, stationary, in the first harbor on the way into Tokyo. One torp, 15 foot depth, under the gun turret. Must of hit the ammo bunker. She blew spectacularly - the explosion rippled down the length of the ship, the seaplane tumbled into the water, lifeboats swung from their davits, and an antenna tower spiralled a few hundred feet in the air. The destruction sequence was just awesome - an example where SHIV is a clear step forward.

Of course, no one bothered to investigate. No destroyers came my way. I gather the Japanese were just not that upset over losing a measly battleship. This is an area where SHIV could use some of the AI aggressiveness of GWX.

I seem to get the opposite. I hit a ship with torps and they just float there. So far, I have had to surface and use the deck gun to finish them off. Or use another valuable torp.

The ships I have seem to never sink even when I hit them with 5 torps.

I also play on easy for now...trying to work up to 100% but...I'm not that good yet...that might make a difference...but it's common sense...if you shoot a ship in the magazine...it's going to blow regardless!

Campaign Game:

Hunting convoys off coast of Japan and came across a Task Force. I have been playing with torpedo depth and in the middle of the group was a ligh carrier. I fired my fish at the heavy tankers and only had one ready when I spotted her. I set the depth to 10' and the fish ran deeper but hit right in the middle of the little carrier and and a cloud rose up the middle of the ship and tremondous explosion rose up and it rolled over and set there for a few minutes then went down.

I nailed a Kongo in harbor and you would have thought I hit a hornets nest. I think the AI sub routine is jsut screwy though. I managed to get away thanks to fog and poor weather but still the planes had radar I think and only my fanatical gunner was saving us.
