Default Targetting specific areas with torpedoes

Another newbie question, sorry. Shooting torpedoes is still somewhat of a mystery to me, even after reading a bunch on it. My main question is, how do you target specific areas of the ships hulls like I see in so many guides? Is this just something you can only do with manual targetting and by shooting the torpedoe at such a time as to cause it to reach the ship and hit a certain part? Is there a way when using assisted targetting to aim for certain areas or to tell where you're going to hit?

Probably be awhile before I try to conquer manual targetting. I'm still trying to get better at the whole figuring out the path of my target and where there going to be so I can get there first and lie in wait for them. 36% realism is enough for me at the moment

to hit the spot you want to
1. lock on target
2. turn lock off
3. point where you want to shoot and fire

Gotcha, I think I understand. So when locking on, does the game always try to aim for mid hull? By turning lock off you can time the shot a bit later so that it goes further back?

With the LOCK on the little triangle will change colour. GREEN is the optimal shot, this is usually +/- 5deg from 0.

When the triangle is green, remove the lock and move the crosshair to the area you want to hit. Do not apply the lock again.

Make sure the torpedo doors are open. Then shoot. You will then hit the area you were aiming at.

The lock will always aim you at midships.

Oooh, video format? Perfect for someone like me. I tried reading a website tutorial on manual targetting but think its a little too much for a newbie like myself. Manual targetting will come eventually though.

Thanks for the links.
