How do I get a new Submarine?

It's 1943 now and I am still in a s-class. Cant I upgrade or something?
I cant buy a new sub with renown so how do I get a new one?

I started in 1941 and I just did a patrol where i sunk 90,000 tons. I figured that would get me a new sub but it didn't.

ok i haven't the game yet but i read your post u can't buy a sub with renown wonder how you get one then?

Maybe u gotta do so many patrols before the option comes up:hmm:

After my second patrol the game said something along the lines that due to my performance I was getting some pull and asked if I wanted to be next in line to receive a new boat when they're ready. Of course I said yes. After the next patrol they had the USS Drum waiting for me.
