I've tried a search, but no joy with that.
I'd like to be able to rename my boat in my campaign. I have the greatest respect and admiration for the officers and crew of the real boats I find myself commanding in the sim, however I would like some personalisation. Can anyone point me in the right direction for this? Thanks! |

Not sure I follow, Skipper. Do you mean this cannot be done?

1. Is this really going that far that renaming a submarine in a computer game counts as an Insult to fallen heroes?
You might turn back a little on the flag weaving. 2. You need to edit two files: \my files\sh4\data\cfg\savegames\save game number ActiveUserPlayerUnits.upc CareerTrack.upc Look up the name of your boat in those files and change it.

Okay, just for the record I'm not American, and it's not flag-waving to honour the individuals who gave their lives, or risked them, in combat -- no matter the flag they sailed under. My point was that the boats in SH4 carry the names of real WW2 US submarines, and I didn't want anyone to think I was not aware of that by asking my question.
And I'm aware that it's bad luck to rename a boat! ![]() ![]() Thanks for the pointers to the files! ![]() |

Actually I rename my boats for the simple reason that I want a blank record and not trying to emulate some historical events.
And it doesnt feel good to me to have a sub that got sunk or something.

Ok I wanted to BUMP this as well as ask an additional question...
I can find the CareerTrack.upc file but the other Ant mentions, "Activeuserplayerunits.upc" is no where to be found...help please? EDIT: I searched my entire UBI folder for this file and found nothing. For player name is it my captains name? or something like that?

For a quick fix right now, if you can't wait:
Save a game IN BASE. Then, go to mydocuments/sh4/data/cfg/savegames/<most recent savegame folder>. Open up careertrack.upc in Notepad. Look for the name of your current boat (USS DRUM, USS BALAO, etc.) and change it to your liking. Also, have a looksee in the activeplayerunits.upc file as well, I can't remember right now if the unit name shows up here as well, or not. For a permanent fix, I'd recommend Beery's solution (thanks, Beery!!!), which is to edit the cfg file for the type/types of sub for which you want to change name. I definitely reccommend this one the next time you fire up a new career. Beery's solution: Quote: Originally Posted by Beery The easiest way to do it is before you start a career - alter the Data\Roster\American\Submarine\SSGato.cfg file so that it only has one unit entry. It's only bad luck to rename a ship after it's in the water. In 1913 the Royal Navy changed all the designations of their ships. The Acheron class Torpedo Boat Destroyers became the 'K' class. They talked of renaming them all with names beginning with the letter 'K', but it was pointed out that they had all already been launched and were approching completion. the succeeding Laforey class were still under construction, so it was considered okay to rename them all with names beginning with 'L' when they became the 'L' class.
The funniest instance of this for me was the original 1797 American frigate United States, sister to Constitution and President. When the Confederacy captured Gosport Naval Yard at Norfolk, Virginia, one of the ships taken was that old frigate. Since it was considered bad luck to rename her, she became CSS United States. On the other hand, the steam frigate Merrimack was rebuilt in drydock as the first American ironclad, so it was considered okay to rename her CSS Virginia.
