Constant Air Attacks

I'm on my second career patrol just out of Midway on my way to Honshu and I'm under constant air attack. I've been attacked so many times, I'm now out of ammo for the AA guns, so my only option is to dive whenever planes show up. Anybody have any ideas about how to get out of this mess? My batteries are about drained, but I can only stay on the surface about 30 min before I'm attacked again. I'm thinking I should just submerge, shut the engines down and sit out the daylight hours (with max time compression), then try crusing on the surface at night. I don't know how long the batteries will hold out though, with no engine. Also, I don't know how bad the CO2 will get. These attacks are a PITA though.
