Default Crew voices very quiet!

Hi all -

I picked up SHIV last night and happily got to installing. Things went well and I patched to 1.1. Once I managed to get the settings on my graphics card sorted (texture quality) I started playing around.

The first thing I noticed was that, if I had 3d sound enabled (and to a lesser extent even if I don't), the voices are extremely low. I have the voice volume at 100% and the master volume at 100%. The music is down around 30% but even then it can easily drown out the voices of my crew.

System specs as follows:

Intel C2D E6400
2 Gig DDR-II
ATI X1950XT PCI-E 256M
Creative Audigy2ZS
OS: Windows Vista

All with latest released drivers.

Anyone have some suggestions??

I have the same issue but my system is not as near as strong as mine. With that said it is a game issue not your system issue. Post this up in the Tech Thread. Might get more help there.

Well maybe it's your speakers. Do you have 5.1 speaker system? 3d sound makes crew voices go to the front centre speaker. So if you have stereo speakers or headphones you will barely hear them. Only chance to hear them better is to turn your "ear" to them. When you will try to hear something standing in front of the sound source you won't hear a thing.

I do have a 5.1 system, but I'm using 5.1 headphones. Things might've gotten porqued with the latest driver install so I'll do some checking when I get home and report back.

You can turn down all the sound sliders some except the main volume and crew voices. Then turn up your speakers to compensate. But I do agree they are pretty quiet at normal levels.

Over in the mod forums there is a fix to getting rid of the ingame music. With that said the crews voice will be heard and not the glorious go sink'em music.

Try adjusting the relative volume settings of voice/sound. I had the same thing and I dropped sound volume to about 80%, leaving voice at 100%. That's fixed it for me. The voices can be heard very well, but they don't drown out other sounds and vice versa. Note that I have music turned off, so you might have to play with that also.
edit: I referred to master volume setting, corrected to refer to voice volume setting vs sound volume setting.
