Default patrol tips

Anyone have any interesting tips for patrolling?

I had a bit of an issue sailing from pearl to Japan on a mission to drop a commando. Obviously, I should have stopped someplace to get extra fuel, like midway (as if it even matters, because even w/ patching, you can still sail on 0 fuel)...So anyway, What should I do? because I can't really utilize submerged running for long periods of time (a-la SHIII)....so yeah. Any tips dealing with that? Or tips in general, if you feel the urge.

Pro Tip: Don't try to destroy the whole convoy
