Riding the waves

In SH3, the sub would not ride the waves during a bad storm. Is this normal and if not, can you do so in SHIV? During a massive storm, I would expect the uboat to get carried along my the waves but that doesn't seem to happen.

Well...this is what I experimented so far. I positioned myself near a passing ship, and completely stopped my machinery. My sub was pushed away and diverted from it;s course by the bow wave of the passing ship.
