If your going to play an IXD2 career game with a high realism setting, and Dead is Dead, you'd better take these with you, your gonna need em.
![]() First, let it be said that there is PLENTY of traffic in the Indian ocean. ![]() ![]() You type7 skippers, i think you can make it if you use Supply ship brake and a whole lot of submerged running, go get em. I have developed a newfound respect for the IXD2 in relation to convoy attacks. For grins i decided to start in the 10th flotilla in 1943, and drive an IXD2 into the indian ocean. Not a big deal really, i was in the living room watcing the history channel most of the time ![]() IXD2 is *Just* enough larger to acutally be a problem. ![]() The sub on the top is a 7c. The bottom is a 9b or 9c. The middle is an IXD2. ![]() And yup, he's about that much larger. Now ive played type9 uboats for awhile. Mostly in an IXC. I dont think ive ever had a n IXD2 career game taht didnt end up on the bottom of the ocean. All i have more to say is i got this boat into penang, but after 3 convoy attacks, i decided taht if im going to continue using this boat, i will not attack any convoy in weather that does not have at least a 9 kt wind attached to it. The last convoy attack, i managed to put myself DIRECTLY ahead of the convoy. Not exactly where i wanted to be, it really wasnt intentionally, i just happen to be on their track. Anyway, against my better judgement i decided to gamble on the lead escort anyway. That didnt pay off, he picked me up. I fired the only T5 on board, and the rat bastage closed the distance before the torpedo could arm itself. I crash dived. His whole barrage missed except for this one depthcharge that... as luck would have it, exploded near the stern end of the boat, damaging both propeller shafts. (Gee i wonder why it hit there ![]() It took all of my concenration, guesswork, foresight, experience, blah blah blah, etc whatever you want to call it, to try and loose contact with ...THREE escorts. Three times i managed to break contact.. and 3 times they regained it. At one point it looked like i might get away, when one escort went back to the convoy.. and then.. as luck would have it.. contact was regained. ALong comes that 3rd escort BACK to the area to rejoin the the circle - with me as the pivot man. After alot of flank speed bursts and hard rudder manuevers to get out of the depth charge barragges, despair just sank in. At this piont i just said, Screw it! Put the rudder to 10 degrees to port, put the motors to ahead 1/3rd, and just sat there running in a big circle, and upped the TC. I figrue, they either give up after awhile, or they score a hit and i die, at any rate, im tired of Trying on this. 4 hours or so later they go away, or start to, i change course to go in the other direction... and TWO CAME BACK AGAIN. Glad i wasnt in that particular spot anymore. Long story short....... I dont think i like that boat. Got it back to port (unbeleivabley enough) but If i play another game, im gonna get me an IXC/40. Any dedicated IXd2 skippers that play with high realism settings, my hats off to you, I don't think i have the brass thats neccessary to stick with it. ![]() |

LOL awesome pic!
The IXD2 is just too big. I mean, the IXD1 was a cargo U-boat so the IXD2 is just the battle version, its way too big. IXC is the way to go! |

IXD2 is the beast of all U-Boats, I must admit I have had short careers the longest one was 5 patrols and I think that was a bit of a fluke. But they do pack a punch if you get the chance to deliver it.

This ought to demonstrate that even more. The following pictures were taken early in GWX's development. At the time i was on the dev team working on the indian ocean RND layers for GWX ( so i have an idea of what to expect over there, but the finiished version looks very little like the orginal version i made way back then, so its essentualy not the same thing anymore). Anyway. the story is, i was testing to make sure the convoys appear as i had planned them to, i found a convoy and started to attack it. I was basically hit by a depth charge while crash diving and was forced to surface. The rest is self explanitory (edit: well kinda, all the other escorts in the area started shelling me, and the one ramming me got in the line of fire, hence the extra fireworks) : ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I love the IXD2
Just not for convoy attacks My IXD2, interestingly enough, was the only boat on which I survived a DiD (WaW, at that) career from 1942 to the end of the war. Just barely - I took on a few convoys with it and escaped; my tower was once rammed by a DD - in the Coral Sea of all places; the biggest enemy though were aircraft - there were at least 3 cases when I was bombed and very seriously damaged; I lost 7 crew to air attacks and came back with barely any hull integrity left... But I guess it was a charmed boat ![]() |

But if you look at the size of the boat in relation to the ramming escort.. it certainly raises an eybrow. |

When I saw your screenshots of the DD on top of you I immediately thought of "The Enemy Below". I half expected to see Robert Mitchum and Kurt Jergens in the close up screenshots.
