Is that common ?...I thought most subs did they're thing anomously anyways....sounds kind a Fishy?

I think it missed a 'report-in' period while deep, and that triggered a "sunk-sub" alert.

One thing that most people probably do not realize is that the USN goes into 'hypermode' when a 'sub sunk' report goes out. It is not 'we will respond when we can', it was we are responding NOW.

This thing went off at 3:00 am. The President, Secretary of the Navy, and probably every base commander on the eastern seaboard got kicked out of bed at 3:15. How much you want to bet that by daybreak the sky's would have been FULL of planes and just about every surface ship was making ready to get underway to assist.

If the sub is not crushed the crew has a VERY limited time to be rescued. That means they would have been out looking. NR-1 is here in the gulf. I'll bet they got emergency tasking to drop what they were doing and re-deploy to assist. There were a LOT of assets that would have gotten the signal and immediately started preps to get to the area for assistance. Even if they did not get direct orders they would have been starting preps in case they were needed.

They started calling FAMILIES at 4am to notify them that a search and rescue was underway. Imagine the phone ringing at 4am with the sub onbusman telling you that they lost contact and they are starting S&R operations and that you will be kept in the loop.

This whole story has me all jittery thinking of what was going on in the wee hours. Any submariner past or present gets the same feeling when they hear that a sub may be down. That is because we can imagine all too well what might be happening.

I'll bet there is a HUGE feeling of relief right now. The WTF will come in a day or two. Right now they are looking at what the response time was and what they could have done had this been real.
