Default Noob question

My apologies if this question is too broad but I tried to keep it specific:

How do I properly TMA a target if it isn't maintaining a straight course and a constant speed? More specificly, how do I even know that a target might not be zigzagging and altering speed?

For the speed part, since I know the tpk and could read it on the sonar, can I factor in the speed change, for example, by having varying length for each segments on the ruler?

Thanks in advance.

Practice, practice, practice ..

Also there are some good tricks not described in DW manual (AFAIK).

If the target is moving in same direction as you (target on the right side is moving to the left, so called lead course) and he is slower then you, the lines will intersect at some point. That is maximum his range.

If the target is moving in opposite direction (target on the right side is moving to the right, lag course) the lines will almost always intersect, and that is his minimum range.

And now .. when the target's angular speed is zero (it does not move to the left or right, it's called collision course), for a slight moment (target is making turn and comes from your lag to lead) .. then the place where the lines intersect is his exact range (well exact enough for the torpedo). So if he makes turn, and you catch it, you have him. It's called anchor point or something like that.

Even if you don't peep the sonar all the time, look for these turns on waterfall .. anything like this ( or this ). Mark, jump to TMA and mark solution to the last intersection. Turn truth on (while training) and see what you've got.

Sure, if he stays on collision course the lines will not intersect at all (they will be parallel), but that's rare.
This also means don't make too much turns when playing against humans. AI does not know this trick.

Other options:

- Use more sensors (typically towed array and hull) and triangulate. Works like hell.
- Use UUVs or sonobuoys.
- Don't use active, especially with LWAMI .. the enemy will shoot right back. But if he has already shot, don't worry and ping him.
