I found this site that lists games that were released for free to the general public by their developers. Some games only have source code released, but a lot have full binaeries.

Hidden & Dangerous, now that was a game worth playing! Despite all it's bugs (which were patched out) it was a joy to play for me. (As with the subsequent H&D2.)
One of the first, if not the best FPS tactical strategy game of its day.
