Type XXI in GWX

Hey all,

I was wondering if, with the GWX mod, how to best employ the type XXI. Are the historical tactics used / proposed with this boat possible? If so, what are they? I tried out the stock single mission tonight, and probably more through luck than anything else managed to sink a carrier, though not before being pinged and scraping along the bottom of the ocean. Any advice / tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No real special historical tactics proven to work, since the boat never really saw combat. However you can apply the same tactics you use with a Typ IX or VII. Now you have a significant advantage in speed and more endurance. Since the escorts can only ping and hear you if they themselves go slower than 10-12 knots you can outrun them under water and change course, since they will lose you quite easily.

However there's one thing I'd like to know myself:
The Typ XXI in reality had special silent motors that gave the Typ XXI a silent running speed of 4-5 knots. The DDs in GWX however can detect you if you're going faster than 2 knots in any boat. So: how fast can I go in a Typ XXI in GWX without the escorts hearing me? 2 knots or 4 knots?

Thanks

The XXI was the first U-Boat designed to be submerged for an entire patrol. That is the best tactic.

The next best thing about the XXI is, if you are detected and start to be DC'd then this boat has such a fast submerged speed that you can easily move out of the way of the falling cans and gain depth quickly.

among your options with the XXI is the "undercut shake"

if in close proximity to the convoy if an escort is charging you

running under the convoy will often shake him as hell stop
to avoid collision. often allowing you to gain enough distance out the
other side of the convoy to break contact with the escort.

Beware running the snorkel before 1945. The #26 radar receiver is mounted on the
conning tower, NOT the snorkel, and you thus won't detect planes when snorting
unless you have the scope up too (and maybe not, and the scope further decreases
your stealth). Only when 1945 rolls around will you get the #37 detector, which is
mounted on the snorkel.

I tried to mod the 37 for 1944 by changing the start date, but either it wouldn't get
installed, or it would break when the mission started.

All good advice, thanks. The advantage in speed and depth is excellent with this boat, as you all have pointed out. Now, the question is, I've often read one of the other big advantages of the XXI is that the torpedoes could be aimed and fired without having to rely on the periscope, thus increasing the boat's stealth. If this is possible in SH3, how exactly is it done?

The best tactic is stay always underwater, use your speed and depth to avoid scorts, and recharge your batteries using snorkel with your periscope raised,
this help detect enemy planes.

one thing more....Could be possible use a 6 knts silent speed in GwX ??? :hmm:

I never detect anything when snorting .

Well I just started a 1945 career in a XXI, and the 37 detector detected aircraft radar 3
times in 3 days in the North Sea. The 26 receiver is worthless: not only is it not
mounted on the snorkel, unlike the 37 it doesn't detect anything even when I'm in a
friendly port and on the surface (such as from my escort ship).

Getting back to the original post in this thread...

Tonight I tried to set up an attack run in the stock single mission, but I had a hard time tracking any one carrier and thus was unable to set up a good firing solution. Are there any "tried and true" tactics for acquiring a good firing solution with the Niebelung sonar? I'm using GWX 1.02, if it helps at all.
