Repeat offenders 'getting away with spot fines'

I hear shoplifter's will soon get away with it, if they are caught they will be given the chance to return the stolen goods and say sorry and that's it. No court case and no fine. Well done Tony Blair another tough on crime and the causes of crime what a joke.

Right on! I can go to the UK now, shoplift all I want until I get caught, just return the merchandise I was caught with keeping all the rest with no record to follow me around! THis is perfect! I'm booking a plane ticket right now!

Not law yet, but they think it's good and I suspect the old rubber stamp will be out soon. On saying that I hear they are doing it now, crazy.

My money is on the latter, HT. I'm sure STEED gets irritated about how many people claim benefits when they're perfectly capable but too lazy to find a job and work

I think most people are.

While you are on the subject single mothers really T me off, my town is full of them sitting around drinking cups of coffee £2 a cup and all the cigarettes they can smoke as well. They get more money than you and I and yet a friend of mine who had a major operation a couple of years back and has a number of health problems now, he is in his early 60's worked all his life and the D.H.S.S have cut all his benefits and treat him like dirt.

No, I haven't.
Have you ever heard of how to spell deterrence?

I think the hefty "on the spot" fines are enough of a deterrent.

Deterrents have only limited effects on crime. Even in countries with extreme punishments for crimes, there is still similar levels of crime when compared to countries that have more lenient punishments.

I would rather my taxes go towards a extra bobby on the beat then going towards keeping some petty thief in prison.

I don't see why you find that so funny.

You mean the only major thing you can come up with is to attack my spelling error? Sad.

There will always be crime no matter how much punishment you implement - that is a given. The point is, if there is no price to pay, and only gains to be had, you create an environment where it becomes OK to do the very thing you are trying to prevent. Personally, I am in shock that you think a simple fine will stop people from stealing - this is what business people call the price of doing business. Your future with fines like this is a future where it will be a major business to shoplift and all you have to do if caught is pay what amounts to a speeding ticket - actually even less than a speeding ticket because it isn't even logged!. No other way to describe it! I am in major shock over this idea.

Trust me - I'd never start a retail business in a country with laws like this!
