Default IIA to IID?

Would it be worth making the jump from my IIA to the IID or saving up my renown for a rainy day?
Been just under a year since i last played SH3 so i cant remember if theres any huge difference between the two subs

Personly i love the small II boats and dont want to make the jump to anything bigger like the VIIB for awhile

Three times the range, mainly. Other than that, the differences aren't major.

I love those little boats, too.

They are class! They are the best boat available for harbour raiding, and also, they are extremely difficult to get a positive ASDIC lock on. So they can slip past destroyers quite easily. I love the IID best of all, believe me, the 500 renown to get one, it will pay for itself and then some in one patrol.

Type IIs are great boats but far too small. They lack fuel and torpedoes, and patrols last for a few days really. I like them but as soon as I can lay my hands on a nice sexy IXC my experience is complete. After that I never look back. Also trying to evade DDs in a IIA/D in late 1943-44 is near suicidal as they lack all the extra gizmos of the larger boats.

Ahh the Küstenunterseeboot.

AJ!; You probably won't find to many that dislike the II's. They have a special attraction, good raiders, make for nice short patrols. Thing is, past mid `40 I find myself playing with more needs then das kleine Boot can provide. That being said I remember some real fun early war short patrols with a II. Never did bother with the IID, or even a flak gun with a II starting my current carrer. Although if a dual 20 was available any earlier or had I kept with the II long enough I would gotten that upgrade before a IID. Probably missed out on some good early war action in Grid AM as a result.

I'm in a Type VIIC now but previously in this career I'd done 16 patrols in Type IIs.

I think you'd be crazy not to upgrade to the Type IID. That extra range is SOOOOOO much better. More than three times the range of the Type IIA. In the IIa you can barely make it up to Scapa and back. In the IIDs you can escape the shallow and dangerous North Sea and comfortably cruise around the deeper and richer hunting grounds of the west coasts of Ireland and Scotland. The IID also has a slightly better submerged speed.

Also, if you're using GWX and in 1st Flotilla, the Type VIIs aren't going to become available for awhile so the small amount of renown needed for the IID is trivial.

Even if you were planning to upgrade to VIIs as soon as they are available (which it sounds like you're not) then it's IID FTW!

The difference between the IIA and the IID is significant. I like the IID a lot. It's a good little boat with decent range and a healthy sting. Give her a try.
