Question about "relative bearing"
Hi,
I just started playing SH3 with GWX 1.02. But I have problems taking the relative bearing of my victim in sight to the navigation map. For example, the Watchofficer says "Ship sighted, bearing 310, 7400 meters". Then i want to mark this position on the Navmap and after waiting some time I want to mark another (newer) position to determine the exact course of the target. But how can i recognize where exactly relative to my boat is 310, as the watchofficer says. With the UZO or the Binoculars this is no problem, but on the navmap, well, it seemed quite difficult. I have no other Mods installed beside of GWX. Is there maybe another Mod which is showing the exact direction of, for example 310 relative to my own boat? |

If you zoom in a little more on the Nav Map you should see a Bearing Overlay. It should be placed directly over your boat icon and should reach out as far as 1500m (IIRC), so you can plot a line from your boat to the target and then read the bearing from the overlay.

In the navmap, zoom in on your U-boat symbol until you get a zoom level at which a compass rose appears. This is centered on your U-boat and is oriented 0deg=bow of U-boat, therefore the compass is oriented to show you relative bearings from your U-boat. e.g. the 30deg mark is 30 deg relative bearing. So all you have to do is click on the ruler tool (click the ? first to get a better set of tools imho). Click the ruler cursor on the center mark in the compass rose, which is your U-boat position, then extend the ruler line through and past the bearing mark you want to put on the chart. Click on the pencil mark (x) button in the menu and put a pencil x on the bearing line you've drawn (as far out from your U-boat as you can with the bearing line you've drawn). This is so you can extend the bearing line out when you zoom out. Now zoom out so you have enough room on the navmap to extend the bearing line out to the reported range for the target. To extend the line, click on the ruler tool again, then click and hold on the end of the bearing line you've drawn, i.e. the end of the line away from your U-boat. Pull/extend the bearing line out to the reported range, making sure the line runs through the pencil x (so you'll keep the same bearing). Presto, you've plotted target relative bearing and range. Do the same for subsequent observations. Line up the plotted observations and you've got target course, and also speed if you use the 3:15 rule (see the Wiki).

Forget about the relative bearing and focus on bearing from north (true bearing) simply add the bearing from scope/hydro to your present course and you still can get the target course, thats what i do because i dont play with bearing overlay or sub icon.
