I always wanted to write him a letter how close I felt to him when I read his novels - now it's too late. Through these and the movie he has even influenced my language style a bit.

Best german WWII writer imo ..

Rest in peace Mr. Buchheim - and yes indeed, I think he's one of the people that we should all be glad survived the war and went on to give such a fascinating account of it.

I have not read any of his books yet, but I plan to.

I just hate seeing all these vets dying off. There are still so many untold stories that are fading away day after day. WWII was one hell of a war, and I can't help but love reading or hearing the tales of heroics and bravery of men under unimaginable conditions.
