Mod Idea for Nibelung Sonar?
When reading about the Nibelung sonar on this page here, I came up with an idea. As this page says, the Nibelbung sonar had the following capability:
"The SU-Apparat (Special Apparatus for U-boats) or also known as Nibelung functioned as an active/passive sensor. It consisted of two basic elements – a hydrophone and a sonar device. Once the hydrophone picked up the bearing of a surface vessel, the sonar would ping in that direction to determine range. Up to three short pulses may be needed, which when plotted together, enabled the operator to determine the target’s speed, range and direction." http://www.uboataces.com/hydrophones.shtml Now, my idea is that, when you ask the sonar operator to give you an estimated or precise range to contact, he will also give you the current bearing. I tried modifying this in the en_menu file by adding the Bearing string to line 4915, but in game this ends up with a big long number (bearing) when asking for a precise range, and a bearing of 000 when asking for an estimated range. So, with that said, is it possible to have the sonar man call out both the bearing and range when asking for the range to the selected contact? In a way he already does this, but unfortunately it's restricted to the nearest warship or merchant contact. It would be nice to have the ability to select a target at the sonar station, click the check box and then have the sonar operator give out range and bearing updates when requested. Otherwise, I'm having difficulty seeing the superiority of the XXI's target tracking ability and being able to set up a viable firing solution with the periscpe down. |
