Hi,
thanks to Anvart it is possible to have the DF antenna in SHIII raised and rotating. Unfortunately it is only possible to have it either raised or lowered, i.e., one has to choose one way or the other. In most pictures of german submarines (I have seen) the DF antenna is lowered. Does anyone know in which situations it was originally raised and for how long? I guess for diving, in stormy weather and also in dangerous (battle) situations it was mostly lowered, but I don't know for sure. So, any comments are highly appreciated. Cheers, LGN1 |

You knew, that DF antenna is not operated. First I have made DF antenna rotation for Type 7c and Type 9 only, but you asked to make it for other types of submarines too. :hmm:

Hi,
Sorry, I didn't want to criticize Anvart's work. I like it and I use the raised DF antenna. I just wanted to know how the antenna was operated historically. @ Myxale: Thanks for the link, very interesting! Unfortunately, nothing is written there how it was commonly used (raised 24/24,...?). Cheers, LGN1 |

I agree with ref. I'm pretty sure they didn't rotate automatically; the radioman rotated it by hand to get the direction of an incoming signal. Hence "direction finding" antenna.
