Default High periscope (in GWX and elsewhere)

In SH1 I used to use the high periscope (running on surface with the scope fully extended)
to aid in long-range detection. Is this a good idea in GWX, or will it get me killed if the
DDs detect it first? Obviously I'd bring it down soon after I find the convoy and not
continue running around with it up.

I personally don't think it exists in SH3 either way. That is, you don't get any more visual distance from the sub and the periscope doesn't appear any higher on the horizon from the ships.
I've tried to use the high periscope and haven't been able to spot a target any sooner than if I was just in F4. But I'm not using the 16 KM mod either.

I tryed it. Didn t notice a difference about spoting. Actualy the watch crew is really effective in SH3. Maybe too much.
But I m sure the hunters are spoting you more easily if you run surface with periscope raised

I can account for this.

In a single mission I created for testing this very theory I placed myself and one DD within acceptable range of eachother approaching the other Bow on.

The distance was such that we wouldn't detect eachother for several minutes from the start of the mission. I started it, kept steaming at 1/3rd and my WO spotted him almost the same time I myself did. I had the stealth meter enabled to tell EXACTLY when the DD spotted me and it did not happen untill about 3000km. granted this was a perfect weather day in broad daylight.

I restarted the mission, this time ctrl+pgup the minute it loaded. Attack periscope all the way up the stealth meter turned red moments later before I even saw the DD or my WO did!!!

I have experienced this in career which is what led me to do this test. Apparently it makes YOU more visible to them, and does abesoultely nothing for you.

Just my own experiment.....

It's funny ASH, but mine are all pretty blind. I've intercepted sound contacts before and raced ahead of them to get a good firing position; while heading to my waypoint, i decide to pop onto the bridge to check out the weather and see if the deck gun is an option - lo and behold, I can see the C3 quite clearly on the horizon, and not a peep out of my watch officer

I tend to trust my eyes more, except in bad weather or at night..
