Default How did it know??

First patrol, came across a destroyer a good way away. Set an intercept course, stayed out of 2km (was night). By the time it came within 2km I was submerged and stationary, so it shouldn't have been able to see or hear me. Only popped the scope up a couple of times. Had everything nicely lined up and the damn thing changed course and came in my direction with floodlights scanning either side of itself. Started pinging me but I haven't read about how to get away (didn't expect to go after a destroyer first patrol) so first career was over pretty quickly

Earlier on I spent maybe an hour or more setting up a target only to ID it as a neutral ship a few minutes before I would have sent it to the bottom

What year? Mods? If you're using GWX, than if your stationary at pd, then you will rise 2-3, which puts your conning tower above water. DD could have seen that, or picked it up on radar.

Best not to chase the destroyers 'cos they're out looking for you

Go for the merchants they're unarmed (for a while anyway)

There's loads of good reading in the stickies at the top of this forum - how to attack, stalk ect.

And welcome to the best (in my humble opinion) forum around

It was '39. I guess they must have seen my scope, pretty unlucky

The reload (might as well, it was the first patrol of the career) had 3 destroyers in the vicinity coordinate together. Couldn't get away, waters were shallow and they kept pinging me to stay within range. I wore most of my battery out Can't believe I actually spent an hour or more running away from destroyers I couldn't see

Welcome to Subsim!

Perhaps she heard you. Were you in silent running mode? If not, even though you are stationary and your motors aren't moving your crew will be running around slamming hatches, shouting at one another and banging on the bulkhead with hammers.

Ensure you have rigged for silent running (press "Z" to do this) and you will be much harder to detect.

Good Luck!

When did u start your career? If its 42 onward, the escorts have radars and see you right away. Early in the war they would only see your scope if you let them get really close, like within 2000m (and of course assuming that you are really quiet).

i haven't checked this out yet, but if i manually set my depth for 16m and order all-stop will I just rise a bit or will I just keep rising until my conning tower is sticking out of the water?

If that is the case I guess I'd have to set my intercept point further back so I could just keep slowly creeping towards my target during an attack...

You should only rise 2 or 3 metres

If you are at PD, all stopped, your boat will slowly rise

I was aware of that, I browed the gwx manual before playing it.

I do have a question about something else but I didn't want to start a new thread. What are the recommended interface mods? Things like the stop watch mod, more realistic interfaces for say nav map, the nomograph tool, different charts, draggable tools etc?

Has anyone grouped a bunch of these into a combined mod or will I just have to download them all seperately and test them out?

Edited to add, knowing things can be dragged made me check gwx and much of it is already there . Anything else you guys would recommend? Is there anyway to get map coordinates? I'm getting locations in messages but don't know where the position is without the latitude and longitude readings on the nav map.

Welcome to the life of a real U-boat kaleun. This is completely normal and to be expected.

Yes. This website: http://www.ubootwaffe.net/quadrant.cgi will translate between grid squares and lat/long coordinates. That being said, don't bother yourself with chasing after the ships in those messages. While those messages are historically accurate and were indeed sent on those days, they don't exist in the SH3 world (with some exceptions of major battles, etc.) So don't plan on beating Lemp to sinking the Athenia or anything.
