Default How about the inclusion of rare speciality technology?

I'd like the ability to earn the privilege to test and use experimental/prototype technology. For instances, will the straits into the Sea of Japan be heavily mined? If so, How about the ability to gain access to experimental technologies like the high or ultra high(i forget) freqeuncy sonar to search out submerged mines(was that hell's bells?). Anyway the equipment was really mechanically undependable at first, required lots of maintenance to keep it operational, but when it was working it did its job. Alerted the crew of mines with a chiming sound.

I need to check my books, but also weird oddly built and just thrown together radar arrays, I think surface search ones and radar detectors to avoid aircrafts. It turns out, wolf packs learned by accident they could communicate with each other by morse code with these things by modding a toggle switch to the equippment and reading the static they caused on each others recievers. And Admiral Fluckey's use of rockets to bombard unarmed and unarmored land targets(the crew built and rigged that themselves on to the bow)

You know, cool little doo-hickies that give you a little edge by gaining access to technology early, but with some little quirks, reliabilty issues, failures and so forth that makes them less than perfect.
