Default Your Finest Hour

What is the bravest thing you ever did in SH3? What is the one event which you will always remember when playing this game? What is the one ship you sank which you will remember to your grave?

What was your finest hour?

It can be as simple as learning how to shoot the flak guns or sinking a ship at 100% realism or trying to look up the skirts of the nurses.

Let's here it, guys. What was your finest hour as a kaluen in SH3?

Good greif, i have to pick just one moment? Ive played this game for so bloody long i can't pick anything out.

....

After thinking for awhile, I just remembered this incident.

I'll just go with that one since im at work and can't type whats tantamount to a short story. I've had a number of equally "lucky" moments though.

January 1942, on my way to the East Coast of America. Donitz ordered the Drumbeat boats not to attack anything on the way unless it was 10,000 tons or over. Well, I came across a convoy with an Essex class carrier in it. In a brilliantly () executed maneuver, I slipped past the escort screen, and sunk her with a spread of 4 torpedoes. I slipped out the back of the convoy and continued on my way, unmolested. It was just so surgical and precise, to take out that one carrier and nothing else, I was extremely proud of that one.

November 1940, I take on a convoy sucessfuly for the first time. Sneak in without being detected, Fire four torpedos at three different ships (two large merchants and a pryo ammo carrier) Three hit and all thee ships go to the bottom! Fire the aft tube as a snap shot on a small merchant, it hits!! Brings it to a halt.
The escorts sniff around but never detect me. Let the convoy go (only contains tramp steamers, coastal and small merchantmen now!) When there over the horizon I surface, man the deck gun and fire two rounds into the small merchant which sinks.

I then do a harbour raid which bags me another 35,000 tons. Uncle Karl had my photo on his desk after that!

The first time I managed to sink a ship all by myself (no map contact update, manual targeting and no WO assist) and lately the first time I managed to get to a friendly port using manual navigation (no sub icon on the map) in the worst conditions (night, 30 knots winds and heavy fog after 3 days of estimated plotting).

It's the small things that I'm proud of, too. Not been playing all that long so haven't ever sunk any really juicy targets like carriers. A couple of nights ago, though, I attacked a convoy with great results. I got into position ahead of the convoy and snuck in. I fired a shot at a target at the other side, but that missed. However, I managed to line up an overlapping shot on a large cargo and large merchant. Fired the three remaining tubes in a spread. Whipped the scope round and fired the rear tube at a large cargo passing by my stern. Immediately dived deep and silent. I got four torpedo impacts reported and soon after all three of the targets had sunk.

This was a notable attack for me, because it was the first time I'd attempted a fan shot at overlapping targets and it worked beautifully. That attack bagged me 27000 tons of shipping in one go, my highest total from a single convoy attack yet.

Attacking a Task Force in '39 consisting of HSM Hood, HSM Rodney, HMS Nelson, an Illustrious carrier and 2 Southampton-class cruiser, sinking HMS Hood and getting away with it without ever been detected.

Encountered the Rodney, the Revenge and some cruisers and escorts approaching Gibraltar. Got the Rodney, but the Revenge simply wouldn't go out... and I was out of torps. Waited a day in the game, and nothing happened. Even tried ramming... didn't work. But hey, at least I got one BB and severely damaged another.

I remeber my first patrol in GWX.
I came across a Task Force with an Illustrius Carrier WSW of Ireland.
I don´t think I ever saw a Carrier in vanilla SHIII.
Managed to get far ahead of them. I´m waiting in there path.
My torpedoes was electric.(max range 3000m).
I can see the carrier at 3600m. Turn my scope to checkout the DD escorts......
.....a DD is steaming with crash collision course at me!! He is 2000m away.
I know I have to wait if I want that Carrier.
When the Carrier is at 2900m from me, with a good solution, I fire of all four tubes. One at a time.
Crashdive!
Three out of the four torp. hit their target. Lucky at that range.
While I´m dodging the DD´s, she´s slowly sinks.

The best of all is that I lived to tell the tail! :rotfl:

The sense of achievement I exerienced when completing my first 100k patrol on full realism (lurking west of Gibraltar)
Come to think of it...I don't think I've managed it since :hmm:

My best patrol was the first 'clean' 100K patrol in 1942 off the coast of Canada. It was the first patrol where I did sink more than 100,000 tons without having to sneak into harbours and attack easy tragets. The funny thing about it was that more than 60,000 tons in this patrol were sunk when I came accross a totally unescorted convoy. 8 or 9 Tankers went down and if the weather was a bit better and I could use my deck gun the two Medium Merchants would not have escaped.
