Default Why fire torpedoes at 25m depth?

The torpedo depth gauge goes all the way down to 25m. This has me puzzled; normally the deepest I'd set my fish is 10 or 11 meters, if I'm trying to crack the keels of a big ship. Beyond that I don't really see any point, unless...

I'm not sure if the acoustic torps adjust their depth automatically. If they do, it would be neat if you could fire them while you were 25m, giving you a head start to escape.

Probably to add to the realism.

If they "forgot" to add that feature, people would start calling them "unrealistic".

Blast a hole through a sub net, or other submerged obstacle or defensive structure?

It's simple: people toyed with the idea of "blind firing", or shooting using sound bearings only. It never worked.

I suppose that if you're, say, in a harbour and there's a stationary ship in front of you, you could dive to 25 metres, fire the torpedo, have it rise so that it hits the ship, and then be more safe when the destroyers wake up.

Just a thought?

They used that depth to jettison garbage and crew members they did not want on the boat anymore.

Actually, if you think about it. Garbage, bodies(if any) were jettison out of the tubes as a decoy before they had the real decoy launcher.

I'm a bit puzzled: wasn't the original question about the depth torpedoes were set to run, rather than the depth a sub fired them at?

Worked once for me! Fired blind from 37m down at a full stop and eneded nailing a destroyer in the ammo bin after it's pass and sunk her.
