Default First Patrol and questions

Hi guys,

Thanks for the warm welcome I receive (from my previous post).

Last night I installed my SHIII, 1.4b patch and GWX. I wanted to do it yesterday but I couldn't leave the office until late. Anyway, after the installation I started my carreer right away. Assign to Kiel, to command U6, type IIA boat.

BTW, my wife saw me playing and she said:"You play that "speedometer, tachometer" game again?" Back in the days when I still played Silent Hunter, she called the game "speedometer, tachometer game" cause that's how the indicators look like

I tried the naval academy, but when I tried one exam (using deck gun, is it artilery exam?) I couldn't load the deck gun. So without finishing the academy I started my first patrol on September 1939, realism level 52% (?). My assignment was AN 81, near England.

My impression, this game is GREAT!!!!! I played Silent Hunter in the past and I loved it, but SH III is waaaaay much better .. no comparison.

I started my first patrol some time before 9 pm, and when I finished, back in Kiel, it was 1 a.m !!! I can't believe I spent 4 hours playing it

I'm also an amateur astronomer and I realize that the constellations (the night sky) is accurate I even got to see Ursa Minor and Polaris ... being in the Southern Hemisphere (-6 deg lat), I never see Ursa Minor, it's always below the horizon

My patrol result was one Large merchant and one amunition ship, I don't remember the tonnage. Each ship needed two torpedoes. I still had two more torpedoes but I was worry about my fuel. So I headed back to Kiel, and I ran out of fuel about 100 km before Kiel... I don't know what the name of the area is. I managed to bring my boat back to the base though. My crews received medals, 13 or so medals, all were War badges (?) .

I have several questions:
1. How do I load the ammo for deck gun in Naval academy? The deck gun was manned, but when I fier it, I got a message saying that deck gun is not loaded.

2. How long do I have to stay with type IIA? It's a bit frustrating to watch the fuel level all the time, and I got worry whenever I move faster than Ahead Slow. I ran out of fuel about 100 km from Kiel, but I was able to sail back. I don't know how. The last 10-15 km I was only able to move at 1 knot (periscope depth) with electric engine. Diesel engine out of fuel.

3. How do I transfer to other base? It took a long time to leave Kiel.

4. I've downloaded Dec 23rd correction for GWX, but I couldn't install it cause I got a message: Windows can't open this file. How do I install it?

Thanks in advance guys,
Bob

Not sure how to answer your other questions but I'm pretty sure I know this one.

When you man the deck gun you'll see, on the right, an image showing four types of ammunition. From left to right they are: star shells, anti-aircraft, HE (high explosive) and AP (armour-piercing). GWX does not use either star shells or AP rounds, as historically U-boats did not carry these. What you need to do is click on the HE round (GWX does not start you off with the deck gun loaded; again, making it more 'real', as you wouldn't start a patrol with a round in the breech). Once you click on it to select that type of round, you'll see a timer bar appear, showing you the remaining time before the gun is loaded.

That's all there is to it!

2. Depending where you start your career, you can start with a VIIb right away. (Wilhelmshaven in Sept 39 for instance)

3. As soon as a new base is opened, you can ask for transfer from the after mission screen when you make it back home.

4. Dec 23 upgrade is enabled using JSGME (Jonesoft's Generic Mods Enabler). Download the program, install it inside your SH3 directory. It opens a folder "Mods". Drop the update in there after unzipping, then run JSGME. It reads what is in the Mods folder and you use arrows in the middle to install or uninstall mods.
As it creates backup files, you can always easily revert to previous situation if you don't like a mod.

Hope this helps...

This game just continues to come out with surprises! I've been playing for awhile and I had no idea about that! Fantastic!

xlbob,
If I may suggest, try completing the academy exams using only stock SH3 (ie only SH3 + patch) to get a feel of the sim. You'll also get a 1,500 renown for completing the exams successfully. After this, save the entire install as a backup, then install GWX.
The reason I'm suggesting this is that GWX changes certain behaviour, which could make it difficult to pass the exams well.
