Default Game Play Observations of GWX after 4-5 Days

A couple of observations about GWX after 4-5 days of playing single missions. Submarine depth at beginning of mission is too shallow (yes, I did read the manual) why? Starting (single missions) at 12+ meters would seem to be the normal periscope depth so why is it not in GWX? The first thing I have to do is get the submarines moving and repeatedly click on the depth button to get the top of the conning tower a meter or two below fthe surface before I'm seen.

Changing speed and getting to that speed is very slow requring multiple (many) clicks with the mouse.

If under attack by DD's/DE's and needing to go even deeper at very slow speeds (1kt) sometimes brings no change of depth for very long periods of time (minutes) why? Going any faster defeats making less noise. I've also watched the depth meter incrediously as the submarine slowly rose in depth at 1kt. Why?

Played Italia mission 3-4 times. Uber Italian destroyers and crews...please.

I'm sure there will be some tweeking in the near future and some of the issues I've brought up as well as others will be addressed. I want a better GWX and I know you can do it.

Submarines were trimmed for positive buoyancy in real life. This is why.

My game play experience:

2kts for silent running will elude warships
2kts and asking for deeper depth works all be it slowly
1kt will allow the boat to acent slowly(naturally occurring phenomenon)

As far as the button clicking repeatly, I experience this with my WO when asking for closest ship and range.

Other than that, I do not see anything wrong with reaction of the uboat.

GWX is to enhance realism, if it's not underwater quake like enough for you, don';t play it ;-)

Default Poor responses

When a player posts a concern his legitimacy should not be in question.

We all know that GWX made many changes to enhance realism. The positive bouyancy one is a good change. To start a mission when in close proximity to enemy vessels with your conning tower exposed is not. This immediatly alerts the DD's and other vessels to your presence and initiates AI attack and evasion tactics from the Merchants and other target vessels. Short of stupidity no Commander would get into the predicament intentionally. So GWX's team may consider starting at a concealed depth and then allowing rise and bouyancy to expose the Sub if the Commander takes no action to prevent the exposure. That is all the asker wanted..

GWX is relatively new...and many will say a vast improvement over stock/vanilla SH3. When you say
Quote:
I want a better GWX
What exactly do you mean ? :hmm:

I agree that the uboat should be started well below periscope depth in scripted missions.. If that is all the poster wanted then he should have stated thus and left it alone but....there are other statments and questions in the post that required an educated answer/response.

Just what is ment by, I want a better GWX!"? Geez, show us your receipt of purchase and we will refund your money....oh never mind, it was free. Mayhaps a thread in the mods section stating difficulty starting with the conning tower showing in scripted missions can it be fixed, possibly more appropriate?

Just my thoughts on the subject.

Dont mean to sound rude or anything, but do you have any idea how long the team made GWX? One could say that the making of the ultimate 'Grey Wolves' started when the team was put together to make the TGW1.1a. From that point onward, the work on the team has been going on pretty much with no pauses. Now, you want them to do it again? What about you starting your own modding team and make a mod you like?

Constructive post are another thing, but saying "I want a better GWX..." to someone who has worked for over a year on this isnt a good idea.

I have not messed with the IIA but the VII sometimes does not do what you dial in. For instants asking for 2kts (click the dial) and the speed is called out but the boat goes to 3kts. I don't think that is a GWX issue though.

Default Bent out of shape for what?

I apologize if I have offended any and all with my "I want a better GWX" comment, this was clearly not my intention. What is clear is that some tweeking needs to be done in order to make GWX an even better mod. Hey, its new and its big.

The work the dev team has done on GWX is awesome...period! I've only been using the mod for less than a week (only single missions) and my comments reflect that.

I take issue with a single mission opening and I'm sliding forward at 4 kts, (what captain...if he wanted to survive, would be travelling at that speed so near enemy ships) but slowly decreasing speed and my submarine is rising enough in the water to expose the very top of my conning tower while I'm still moving forward! Some of the new missions put you very close to GWX's amped up DD's/DE's. This, in light of several posts regarding AI behavior of enemy escorts seems...not fixed.

Some of the comments made by persons to my original post have simply taken my comments TOO personally...TOO defensively. Get a Life. Hey its a great mod...I just want it to be even better!

We understand. Post your concerns on the mod in the mod section for the GWX team to look at and possibly correct. Yeah, I agree that starting a mission with the tower out of the water makes no sense at all.

As far as people getting defensive, the GWX team busted their humps with the mod and it just seemed odd that you wanted a 'better GWX'. Sorry man, it don't get much better than this IMHO and I'm sure the others will agree.

Again, post to concerns on the mod forum were you find the GWX team lurking!

I think you have to understand that most here on this board are historians to a large degree, myself included. Among many venues of interest is this one...military WWII.

The GWX team used many reliable and credible sources as their reference for developing the mod...not the least of which includes behavioral physics of the U-Boat depending on the variant.

You also have an "older" crowd here I suspect...myself included and as such, the ambience is one of educated and dry humor. I appreciate that.

With no offense intended, it sounds as though you may want, as one veteran here describes it, a "modified arcade game". That you will not find in GWX. It's a tough, thinking strategy simulation...I wouldn't even classify it as a "game" as there is too much hardcore history behind it.

Get used to 2kts max and a bouyant tendancy when submerged!

Little discrepancies there may be...and in time I'm sure they'll get worked out. Of course, what we'll have then is the real deal and no need for a computer based interpretation!

Now...what marina am I going to keep a 211' long Type VIIC at?
