Default GWX enemy aircraft... WOW.

I am currently playing a GWX campaign and I am totally amazed at how agressive the enemy aircaft are now!

Having no snorkel yet, I was cruising on the surface during a GWX campaign patrol in 1943, and I started detecting radar signals and decided to wait and see which it was- an enemy aircraft or destroyer escort. After identifying the aircaft visually- it was 2 Marlets I think, I did a crash dive and later heard some bombs explode farther away (totally missed me). I waited about 20 minutes game time and then surfaced again. Suddenly, I started detecting radar signals again. I waited and again visually identified the aircraft as single Catalina. It dove on me and dropped it's bombs (missed). Then the Catalina continued circling while followinging me.. and would not leave. Wow! I dove again to find safety in the depths. Every time I surfaced later, an enemy aircraft would be close by, searching the area for me. This happened to me about 4 or 5 times in a row. It seems the aircraft attacking me were sending radio messages back to base or other planes in the area and reporting my position. Later, more and aircraft kept showing up, searching the area for me. I was really impressed by this. Really adds to the realism.

Also. on another GWX campaign patrol, I was attacking an enemy convoy. I was jumped by an enemy destroyer escort. I stayed at periscope depth while trying to evade the hunter. About 15 minutes later, a Catalina aircraft showed up over the convoy, circling and searching for me. Aparently, the enemy escort had radioed the aircraft my position.

Those enemy aircraft just won't give up! Really great job GWX team.

As the aircraft should be

I'm looking forward to running the gauntlet of aircraft in '43 onwards.
I'm currently on my 6th patrol in Dec. '40. (happy times for me!)

Sounds like you have been lucky and only come across rookie planes! Watch out in future, especially for planes carrying rockets.

Squadron Leader Terence Malcolm "Sub Killer" Bulloch DSO&Bar, DFC&Bar Attacked over 25 U boats and sank over 20 in his B-24 Liberator. In one action he held 2 packs of u-boats (21 boats in total) away from a convoy south of Iceland. He sank one, damaged another and then kept the rest away from the ships by constantly finding them and flying over them whilst spraying the decks with MG fire.
Only 2 ships where lost in the convoy and most of the 21 U-boats had to give up the chase.

Be careful during those "Happy Times"!

Today, April, 1940, I was sitting off the coast of England near Scapa Flow at Parascope depth waiting for a Merchant to come cruising by between the islands to the north and the mainland. Interesting enough, since I was sitting below the surface, I decided to turn my volume up pretty loud so I can jump back and forth between the sound-dial to listen for nearby traffic. Also, interesting enough, I was sitting at Parascope depth completely motionless.

Well, to make a long story short, I forgot that in GWX you will rise about 2 to 3 meters above your set depth when you are traveling less than 3 knots (I was completely motionless). So, my conning tower was definitely breaking the surface. While I was waiting using TC, reading "Operation Drumbeat" in front of me not looking at the screen, with the volume up fairly loud so I could use the sound-dial from time to time, an enemy aircraft dropped two bombs right next to me that nearly shattered the windows in my little room. It definitely woke me up. I jumped completely up out of my chair reaching for the volume knob. It completely scared me to death.

Anyway, the damage to the U-boat was minimal, and it was quickly repaired. I crash dived carefully since I was in fairly shallow water. I then peaked up to about 14-15 meters to allow my Observation Scope to break the surface occasionally to see what was going on. That plane, or other planes, were circling around my area for the next three hours until dark came on. I couldn't beleive it. I was pinned beneath the surface like it was 1944.

Hehe...that made you jump? Think about your crew!

I advise you avoid shallow waters at any date! Unless your in a IIA 'duck'

And during the day, you don't cruise along on the surface..

Not allways good advise.

When coastal command get radar they can "see" you on radar and attack at night when you can't see them as quickly. Best to stay on the surface at day if the weather is not foggy. In the day you can see planes comeing and dive. At night the planes get closer before you see them.
When night comes; thats the time to hide under water after mid '43

I was in a IIa when this happened. I also wasn't cruising along the surface. I was sitting at "Parascope Depth" completely stationary. This means that I was actually sitting about 2-3 meters above "Parascope Depth" (another very realistic addition from the new GWX mod). This means that my conning tower would break the surface of the water occasionally, and the plane must have seen the top of my conning tower bobbing up and down.

In my opinion, this incident shows how realistic the new GWX mod has made this game. You really have to stay on your toes.

I guess I didn't have a choice as far as avoiding the shallow water. I go where BDU tells me to go, and the sector I was assigned was very shallow.

They are much better than stock, but i still think these should be more air activity over the bay of biscay, i started a carreer in 44 and i didnt get jumped by planes as much as i thought i should have - maybe ive just been lucky so far, out of one patrol -only 2 air encounters, 1 wellington (flak crew shot it down) and a b24, (crash dived).

Ive read about uboats being forced to leave and return to port submerged in the late war, this hardly seems neccesary in GWX, stock sh3 or any other mod ive tried, I just dont get that feeling of the enemy being on the doorstep in the late war -so to speak ... its just a little knit-pick but still Ive only played one late war patrol, so maybe i need to play more to make a more fair evaluation.

I agree, the Bay is not dangerous enough, but Gibraltar is a virtual harakiri playground for uboats.

Two aircraft came across me east of England in 1939. From that moment on, my Type II-A was hounded mercilessly every few hours by new aircraft - all of which were devillish skill-wise. The fact alone that they use machine guns and cannon is enough to make them more dangerous, and their improved A.I. is certainly not helping either.

Was jumped by two Hurricans and shot up real good before I got under. They didn't drop DC's just shot up the boat. This dropped the Hull rating to 86%.This GWX Mod is very realistic. The DD's are really better in GWX they seem to ping you alot more now. If I run at "slow" it seems to help being detected right away. What a great job by the GW Dev Team.

That is awesome! That's the way fighters should behave, and that's about the result they should get.

Did you lose any crew, or have any wounded?

No "men down on the deck" this time. I had that when the Deck Gun was manned. The planes are very deadly now!!!! Also the AA guns are not as good so it's more realestic now. I just crash dive asap now!

Sometimes the new plane behaviour can be stupid too , first patrol I get jumped by what I thought was one Hurricane - I hit "," to look at it while I dived , it starts its attack and dives at me guns blazing - next thing just as its about to pull out of its attack run , another Hurricane suddenly slides into view and crashes into it , seems Binky and Chocko were in such a hurry to bag a U-Boat they came in on converging angles and crashed into each other just overhead

I managed to shootdown 1 hurricane last patrol , but another 4 showed up just afterwards , after that I had to change my course in my patrol grid by 90 degrees and stay under about 2 hours just to stop the progression of planes comeing out looking for me.
