Default I'm Pretty Impressed

I'm a WWII history buff...and a former lurker to this forum.

I started playing SH3 around T-Day...yes, I'm a latecomer to this game. Didn't even play stock...went right with TGW mod. Very impressive! Then comes the GWX and that's the way it SHOULD have been from the start! I started a new career out of Lorient in Sept, '40 in my U47 Type VIIB. On third patrol in GWX.

I've lurked about here for many weeks reading the comm manual and getting the feel for the tactics. I'm still not totally thrilled with the damage model...last patrol I nailed two whalers out of a convoy and the little devils motored on, albeit, filling with water, but I couldn't stick around to see if they sunk...I had two DD's on my case and I had to evade!

Huge KUDOS to the GWX team...and my thanks to you folks here for a great forum!

Hi SG I'm new here as well but welcome anyway. Why didn't you buy SHIII when it was first released?

I think it's safe to say that a lot of us discovered SHIII by accident. Just ask GWX leader Kpt.Lehmann
That's in part because subsims haven't had any kind of serious exposure over the last few years - it would take an accident for most of us to find it. But it's great that the game is attracting the unexpected attention it deserves

Takes me back to a month or so before SHIII release when I stumbled over a few screenshots of it and for some unknown reason fell into that pre-release fever that is slowly building up for SHIV now.

Ah, you could not tell or follow to see if they sunk. Nothing wrong with that damage model. Many ships were hit and still made port. I believe the model is dead on.

I know historically, that your comment is correct and I have no real argument with the damage model. After a grueling 10 days in heavy weather, no contacts, and then I literally bump into a fat convoy...well, you know the feeling!

Actually, if you press the "." and cycle thru the ships, you can hang around and see what the outcome is and still be able to direct your sub the hell out of dodge.

Near the end of my first GWX patrol, I was running the Western Approaches, found two unescorted ships...an ammo freighter and a large cargo. Weather was perfect...0 m/s seas, and dusk. 3000 meters from them...out of torps...surfaced and deck-gunned them from long range to the waterline. A nice tonnage bag!

A very unhistorically correct action perhaps...but certainly gratifying!

Not really, it depends on the year.

I do know what you mean for sure. The night time high weather convoys can be killers. Nothing worse then seeing your prize sail off after hitting it few times. What is worse you begin to think of doing something crazy so you can sink it.
