Default GWX "Night Vision"

Can someone confirm this?

I was following a merchant at night and decided I'd just test out the changes made in this mod so I try to get as near as the merchant to see at what distance he will see me. Turns out that at a stunning 300m (not 3000m) he didnt even see me yet. I know he didnt see me because he kept the same course ( I play 0% realism (just to spot these "changes")) Then i was thinking ... hummm, maybe he's from a country I'm not at war with. I was going to fly off but then decided to shoot two torpedoes, just to make sure. Turns out he was an enemy after all (there was a red sunk ship icon on my map).

So ..... bascically, the merchants can't spot you at night? Am I right? I think this is a good idea but maybe exagerated a little bit, 300 meters is darn close....

I´ve read about uboats that have been on surface in the middle of a convoy during the night, without being noticed.

That's the whole point. SHIII and variants have had merchants and escorts spotting you at 3000 meters on a dark night. If GWX lets you get that close without being spotted then so much the better.

Wasn't it U-61 that was forced to surface 600m away from a destroyer, but managed to slip away in the darkness on the surface?

Pre GWX I tested out how close you could get without being spotted and 300m was it using GW1.1a as long as you approached slow and decks awash. Keeping all off duty crew in the forward compartments also reduces your bow wave and lets you get a bit closer.
