Nifty site; check it out!
I'd done a search here before posting this, on the off-chance that it's been posted before. I didn't see any sign of it, so hopefully this'll be new.
This site has a 'walk-through' of the U-boat U-505, with really excellent colour photos (and detailed explanations to 'boot') of the command room. (http://ubootwaffe.net/u505/index.html). It appears that, as it progresses, they'll be adding more sections of the boat as walk-through exhibits. Does anyone happen to know what the brackets he mentions on this page (http://ubootwaffe.net/u505/cr_ca.html) held? If you do, I'm sure he'd love to find out. ![]() Last edited by Albrecht Von Hesse; 11-30-06 at 09:50 PM. |

Thanks!
![]() Maybe we should contact the site owner and give him a Subsim and Silent Hunter welcome? |

Sounds good! The site is really informative, i leqrned things i haven't thought of before. Like the diveplane-buttons on the wheel. They were used most of the time, and the wheel only during silent running, because the electric engines connected to the buttons made a lot of noise. this is good stuff!

Almost 200 views and only 2 people comment. --sighs-- I'm going back to being a permanent lurker.

Growing up in the South suburbs of Chicago, I had the excellent experience of touring the boat numerous times.
This was back before computers were a common household appliance, so I had no idea how cool and useful some high-res photos would be 20-35 years later. ![]() |

Let's see...why didn't I make any comments? Maybe because I already knew about the U-505's home site, which I think is better, and didn't want to insult anybody?
http://www.msichicago.org/exhibit/U5...our/index.html Besides, at 25 posts per page, do you really want eight pages of people saying "Wow! Cool, man! Thanks for sharing!"

Before I decommission and mothball myself I thought I'd leave some parting comments.

I don't see how posting that there is an additional site can be construed as negative or detrimental. I'm glad you knew about it. I sure didn't. Not until you mentioned it just now. I don't see how I, or anyone else for that matter, could have been insulted if you had posted something like: "Nice site. Did you know there's another one? It's at http://www.msichicago.org/exhibit/U5...our/index.html, and if you liked the one you found I think you'll like this one even better. I know I did. Go take a peek. You'll find it very interesting and informative."And by not commenting, you deprived me, and anyone else reading the thread, of the knowledge of a site that is certainly interesting, and apropos, to the SHIII genre. See, very shortly after discovering the Subsim Radio Room Forums, I soon realized that I wanted to be a part of the community and the site. Not just a lurker, or a now-and-then question-asker (not that there's anything wrong with either). But an active, participatory and contributing member here. Now there's no way I can begin to match the depth and wealth of experience of those that have been here since its inception. But I do have free time, and loads of PC experience, and (I'd like to think) more than a bit of experience with SHIII. I like helping people, and enjoyed trying to answer their questions (often by pointing out a prior thread one of you 'Elders' had posted that had the answer). I enjoy doing research, and posting the results if they applied as an answer, or just as general information that I thought the community at large would find interesting. But I don't feel either participatory or contributing when no one comments. I feel more like the red-headed step-child that is tolerated at reunions because, well . . . because. I feel as if my efforts are looked at with an 'Eh. Whatever,' passing shrug. I was looking forward to growing into the community and becoming a part of it. Instead I feel as if I'm outside in the cold, nose and hands pressed against frosty glass as I peer at a world of warmth and camaraderie that I'll never be a part of. So adieu one and all. |

Aww cmon Albrecht, we want you here man.
I really could care less whether someone follows up my threads or not but thats just me. I guess I could see where some might be sensitive about it. The forum needs people regardless of how much they know posting things. I learn from these posts and hate to see any thread in my fav forum turn sour. I did look at your link and liked it alot but did not post because I am not one of the "Great, cool site man!" guys. But again, thats just me. But what is also me is I do not want to see anyone withdrawing from the forum simply because a thread was not responded to. Bigger fish to fry than that one. I love you man!! LOL ![]() Chuck |
